Instructional Assistant – Medical Assisting (Part Time, Temporary Hourly, Non-Benefited)
The Instructional Assistant will serve as an Instructional and Lab Assistant; assist the primary course instructor in the education of students using state-approved criteria to teach, select, and conduct hands‑on learning experiences appropriate for meeting classroom objectives. Under direction of and providing support to faculty, the assistant will prepare labs, organize supplies/equipment, and observe student performance and testing.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Prepare laboratory environments for instruction by assembling necessary resources.
- Assist faculty with demonstrations, observation, and evaluation of student essential skills performance.
- Maintain records of laboratory activities, which may include typing forms, inputting data, or otherwise retaining information regarding students and their progress in meeting instructional goals.
- Reinforce knowledge and skills introduced by the course faculty.
- Clean and maintain instructional lab equipment.
- Cleanup laboratory sessions.
- Support department faculty with copying class materials, stapling, and hole‑punching; sort papers and/or supplies.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Assist Program Director with completion of MAERB faculty workbook and required documentation for accrediting body approval.
- Ability to develop strong working relationships with people from different cultural backgrounds and other aspects of human diversity.
- Must be well‑organized, self‑motivated, and dependable.
- Possess well‑developed verbal skills required to present and exchange technical or complex information.
- Must be personable, have good interpersonal skills, be able to work in a team environment, have a willingness to teach, and be proactive.
- Have sensory and physical requirements related to performing the essential functions of a medical assistant.
- Experience with medical‑assisting equipment and ordering of equipment and supplies.
- Maintain current knowledge of course content by completing a minimum number of hours of continuing education annually to meet CAAHEP requirements and MAERB (Medical Assisting Education Review Board) guidelines.
- Ability to perform a variety of tasks daily.
- Medical Assisting certificate/degree or higher from an accredited institution that includes coursework equivalent to the uniform certificate degree in Medical Assisting as approved by the Oregon State Board of Education and offered by Oregon’s community colleges.
- One year of experience in Medical Assisting or a related field.
- Certifications/Licensing:
Medical Assisting (CMA or CCMA), or LPN, RN, MD, DO, or PA. - Medical assistants must be credentialed in good standing by an organization whose credentialing exam is accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA) or the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). The CMA or RMA credential is preferred.
- Medical assisting credentialing must be in good standing as specified below or one or more of the following: RN, LPN, PA, MD, DO.
- Continuing education or courses in a related field.
- Approximately 5 years of prior work experience in teaching, coaching, or assisting in a laboratory setting.
- CPR /First Aid Certificate.
Regular office hours are established between 8 am–5 pm during the work week. A flexible work schedule, including nights and weekends, may be necessary due to the nature of the responsibilities.
Incumbent must be able to function effectively indoors in an office environment engaged in primarily sedentary work. Requires ability to work at a workstation for extended periods, to read written materials and computer screens, and to use telephonic conversations. Occasional lifting up to 25 lbs is required. All individuals must perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation. Persons in this position may be exposed to blood or other potentially infectious materials.
