The Part-time Instructor provides instruction in Medical Assistant Program or Allied Health classes, directs student discussion and evaluates student performance in the classroom, lab or practicum under the direction of the Program Director and Allied Health Chair in this CAAHEP (Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs) program.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Provide instruction in Medical Assisting and Allied Health courses in classroom, remote, or online delivery mode using established course outcomes. This includes providing individual conference time to guide and evaluate student progress. Teaching assignments may include courses taught during the day and/or evening, classes taught on any of the four campuses COCC serves, by interactive video chat technology.
- Adhere to instructional plans which guide student instruction according to established student learning outcomes.
- Provide individual conference time to guide and evaluate student progress.
- Serve as a professional role model and resources person for students.
- Individuals performing as practicum faculty or coordinators will also perform the following:
Provide oversight of the practicum experience, ensure appropriate and sufficient evaluation of student achievement, and participate in orientation for the on-site supervisors as well as selection and approval of practicum sites under the direction of the Program Director. - Lab faculty or assistants will also perform the following tasks: participate in lab set up, inventory supply, and equipment maintenance as directed by the Program Director.
- Work with appropriate College personnel to write proposals for program funds or prepare documentation for accreditation requirements.
- Assist with program outreach.
- Cooperate with the Business Department efforts to revise and standardize curricula for these classes.
- Attend regular trainings as scheduled by the department or College.
- Perform other essential duties and tasks specific to each location, as assigned.
- Direct student learning and assess student progress in achieving the requirements of the program in the appropriate learning domains (cognitive, psychomotor and affective domains) identified by CAAHEP.
- Maintain current knowledge and competence in topics and skills reflected in core curriculum objectives taught in assigned classes.
- Complete a minimum number of hours of continuing education annually to meet CAAHEP requirements and MAERB guidelines.
- Assist Program Director with completion of MAERB faculty workbook and documentation required for accrediting body approval.
Individuals must possess these knowledge, skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the duties and responsibilities of the job.
- Thorough knowledge of field of Medical Assisting and/or Allied Health topics based on education and/or experience in the field.
- Ability to teach and assess student achievement in cognitive, psychomotor and affective domains as identified in the CAAHEP Core Curriculum, Appendix B of the Standards under the guidance of the MAERB.
- Knowledge of teaching and instruction of various audiences and group dynamics or completion of MAERB approved education prior to assignment.
- Knowledge of teaching and instruction of various audiences and group dynamics.
- Visual ability, corrected, to enable instructor to observe, direct, and supervise students in classroom situations.
- Ability to operate or oversee the operation of computers, video chat technology (e.g. Zoom) and familiarity with or willingness to learn the learning management system (LMS) used at COCC.
- Ability to orally communicate effectively with others, using the English language, with or without the use of an interpreter.
- Ability to communicate effectively in writing, using the English language, with or without the use of auxiliary aids or services.
- Ability to review, understand and apply concepts presented in training programs, conferences, and/or professional literature.
- Ability to work with other faculty and COCC staff at all levels.
- Willingness to travel and/or teach at various hours and locations, as required.
- Ability to work cooperatively with and contribute to a diverse workplace through ideas or experience.
Ability to work in classroom and office environments using computers, white boards, projectors, and other basic office equipment. All individuals are required to be able to perform the essential functions without a significant risk of injury or to otherwise demonstrate or explain how they can perform the essential functions listed above.
