Primary Purpose

The Part-Time Instructor provides instruction in Theatre Arts courses, directs student discussion and performance activities, and evaluates student learning in classroom, rehearsal, and performance settings.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide instruction in area of discipline, using approved course outcome guides. Teaching assignments may be during the day (including early morning), evening, or weekend, and could include classes taught at any of the College campuses, online or remotely.
  • Hold at least one scheduled office hour per class per week for student help sessions and program assistance.
  • Participate in course assessment.
  • Utilize College tools and resources, including the Learning Management System and Student Accessibility Services software, to support teaching activities as appropriate.
  • Perform other essential job functions as assigned that support the overall objective of the position.

Individuals must possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the duties and responsibilities of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities. The individual is expected to follow College work rules and policies.

  • Thorough knowledge of Theatre Arts, including acting techniques, textual analysis, and performance practices, and demonstrated ability to apply that knowledge.
  • Ability to teach acting and performance techniques appropriate for beginning through advanced students.
  • Ability to guide students in physical and vocal performance skills in a safe and inclusive learning environment.
  • Ability to work with and present curriculum concepts to a wide range of students with varying diverse backgrounds, abilities, and learning styles.
  • Ability to create a supportive, collaborative classroom and rehearsal environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to use a variety of teaching and assessment strategies, including performance‑based evaluation.
  • Ability to effectively use Microsoft Office suite; various course management systems; technology to teach traditional, hybrid, or online courses; and other technology used in the instruction setting.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with diverse students, faculty, staff, and community members.
  • Ability to provide educational services in a manner that does not discriminate on the basis of race, creed, religion, color, national origin, disability, age, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, or marital status.
  • Willingness to teach at various times, locations, and delivery formats as program needs require.
  • Ability to foster a collaborative atmosphere among students and the willingness to work effectively as part of a faculty team.

Ergonomic Requirements

Ability to work in classroom and rehearsal environments using computers, white boards, projectors, and other basic instructional or office equipment. Instruction may require standing and active movement for extended periods. All individuals are required to be able to perform the essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.

Education:

  • Master’s Degree in Theatre, Drama, or a related field from an accredited institution;
    or a minimum of 30 quarter hours (20 semester hours) of graduate credit in Theatre or a related discipline.
Experience:
  • Demonstrated expertise in one or more areas of Theatre Arts, such as acting, performance, or theatre studies.
  • One year of successful college teaching experience in the subject area or evidence for the potential for excellence in teaching.
