Lonza Bend has an internship position available for students interested in gaining experience in the pharmaceutical industry, specifically in sustainability and environmental engineering. The program duration is for summer 2025 with some flexibility with start dates and end dates. Potential interns must be able to commit to at least 40 hours per week throughout the duration of the summer internship.

Key Responsibilities
  • Data collection and analysis of energy use in the manufacturing, product development, and research facilities to advance the site goal of reducing energy use and greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Data collection and analysis of water use in the manufacturing, product development, and research facilities.
  • Developing tools for Life Cycle Analysis to assess the raw materials, energy, and emissions involved in the product life cycle.

The Sustainability Intern will offer technical support to advance the Lonza Bend site sustainability roadmap projects. These projects enhance the sustainability features of the site by decreasing energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, water usage, and waste generation to meet our company goals.

You will work closely with our team to determine the most effective strategies for sustainability and successfully implement them. Your contributions will be invaluable in helping us compete at a global level while strictly adhering to our corporate sustainability goals.

Education
  • Required education completion of Junior year (typically 90 credits) towards a B.S. degree or equivalent experience in Energy, Environmental, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering.
  • Specific coursework in Energy Studies and/or Sustainability preferred.
  • Must currently be enrolled in B.S. or M.S. academic program.
Required Skills & Experience
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
  • Self-motivation and the ability to contribute as a team member.
  • Ability to coordinate, plan, and complete projects.
  • Research skills and attention to detail.
  • Data collection and analysis using spreadsheets and/or modeling software.
Preferred Skills
  • Experience or training evaluating energy use, water, wastewater, and waste generation in a manufacturing and research environment.
  • Understanding of Life Cycle Analysis as applied to manufacturing systems.
Working Conditions
  • Accessing locations to install measuring devices, including on or adjacent to utility, manufacturing, and analytical equipment.
  • Lifting and moving sampling equipment weighing up to 35 pounds.
  • Driving between multiple locations in Bend, Oregon using personal vehicle.

Our site in Bend, Oregon encompasses research and development, product and clinical development, and commercial manufacturing for various technologies and products. The Bend community is situated on the eastern slopes of the cascade mountain range and offers a wide range of outdoor activities. The Bend site consists of multiple buildings scattered throughout town, ensuring convenient access for all employees.
