Position: Single Role EMT

Overview

The City of Bend is seeking qualified applicants to establish a Single Role EMT eligibility list with the Bend Fire & Rescue Basic Life Support Program. Positions include full-time, part-time, and on-call/intermittent. The Single Role EMT position is limited-term, with a maximum of three years of service. Under general supervision, this position provides basic medical care and transport of the ill and injured as an Emergency Medical Technician-Basic (EMT-B).

A new collective bargaining agreement is under development between the City and IAFF. The posting will be updated as needed to reflect new benefit information. Testing is scheduled for the week of March 9-13, 2026, and applicants must be available for that week. Bend Fire & Rescue anticipates a two-week academy for Single Role EMTs from April 13-24, 2026, Monday through Friday, 08:00-17:00.

Role responsibilities

A day in the life of a single-role EMT at Bend Fire & Rescue moves quickly and is grounded in purpose. Typical activities include equipment checks, ambulance prep, and handling a steady flow of BLS calls. EMT-Bs train with experienced firefighter-paramedics, practice medical skills, run rescue scenarios, and operate as part of a team. Shifts include real calls and ongoing hands-on learning to build confidence and capability.

  • Responds to emergency medical calls and provides basic life support services.
  • Operates an emergency vehicle safely to and from emergency scenes.
  • Monitors radio and communication equipment.
  • Provides emergency medical care within the EMT-B scope and in accordance with policies, procedures, and protocols.
  • Transports patients to hospital emergency rooms.
  • Obtains and records vital signs and circumstances of the emergency.
  • Prepares incident reports for billing and record keeping.
  • Maintains medical information confidential under HIPAA.
  • Participates in EMS training and public education activities.
  • Participates in station and EMS equipment maintenance.
  • Complies with department rules, regulations, and training materials.
  • Works under supervision of physician advisor.
  • Performs duties safely and efficiently.
  • Maintains personal safety and promotes safe work practices; operates vehicles and equipment safely.
  • Participates in on-roster and off-roster staffing callbacks and mandatory training.
  • Maintains a professional appearance and courteous conduct with colleagues and the public.
  • Performs duties within the approved scope of certification and reports any issues promptly.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or as the situation requires.

  • Bilingual abilities in languages spoken in the community are highly desirable
