Position Overview

The Medical Assistant is responsible for daily patient flow for each respective physician for whom they work. They must use triage skills to gather information from which designated staff can make appropriate patient health assessments and to anticipate physician's needs as they relate to the patients' medical care. This position does not manage any other caregivers.

Essential Functions and Duties
  • Escort patients to exam rooms and prepare for physician assessment.
  • Records and maintains patient medical data in the patient’s chart.
  • Assists physician with answering phone requests from patients and/or other medical professionals and institutions.
  • Performs a variety of physician-requested ancillary and/or surgical patient procedures (excluding the administration of IV medication).
  • Maintains equipment, instruments supply inventory levels.
  • Supports the vision, mission, and values of the organization in all respects.
  • Supports Lean principles of continuous improvement with energy and enthusiasm, functioning as a champion of change.
  • Provides and maintains a safe environment for caregivers, patients, and guests.
  • Conducts all activities with the highest standards of professionalism and confidentiality.
  • Complies with all applicable laws, regulations, policies, and procedures, supporting the organization’s corporate integrity efforts by acting in an ethical and appropriate manner, reporting known or suspected violation of applicable rules, and cooperating fully with all organizational investigations and proceedings.
  • Delivers customer service and/or patient care in a manner that promotes goodwill, is timely, efficient, and accurate.
  • May perform additional duties of similar complexity within the organization, as required or assigned.
Education
  • Required:

    High school diploma or GED.
  • Preferred:
    Graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant program.
Licensure / Certification / Registration
  • Required:
    • Current MA Certification from one of the following:
      The American Medical Technology Association (AMT), The National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT), The American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), The National Association for Health Professionals (NAHP) Certification, National Health career Association (NHA) or current Oregon licensure as an intermediate or paramedic level EMT, LPN, RN, or Athletic Trainer.
    • AHA Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider certification.
  • Preferred: NA
Experience
  • Required:
    • Basic knowledge of ICD-10, CM/CPT/HCPCS coding conventions and procedures.
    • Working knowledge of medical practice management information systems.
    • Basic knowledge of physician office documentation standards.
    • Maintain confidentiality and meet all HIPAA requirements.
    • One (1) year of experience in Medical Assisting if certification was earned through work experience.
  • Preferred:
    Two (2) years of Medical Assisting experience.
Additional Position Information

Travel:
Ability to travel to business functions, trainings, meetings, and all St. Charles Health System worksites.

Personal Protective Equipment

Must be able to wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required to perform the job safely.

    Standing and walking, keyboard operation, use of clear and audible speaking voice and the ability to hear normal speech level.

    Sitting, lifting/carrying/pushing or pulling 1–25 pounds.

    Bending, stooping/kneeling/crouching, climbing ladder/step-stool (varies by area), reaching overhead, lifting/carrying/pushing or pulling 25–50 pounds, grasping/squeezing, ability to hear whispered speech level.

    Climbing ladder/step-stool (varies by area), operation of a motor vehicle.
  • Exposure to Elemental Factors Rarely (10%):
