Position Overview

The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) staff various units throughout St.Charles Health System, providing 24/7 specialized care to patients during hospitalization and discharge. The CNA supports the care team in accordance with the system’s mission, policies, and the Oregon State Board of Nursing regulations. This position does not directly manage other caregivers.

• Review and follow directions for patient care within scope.
• Assist patients with activities of daily living (ADLs) – bathing, dressing, feeding, toileting, mobilization.
• Provide personal hygiene care, ensuring patient dignity and comfort.
• Respond promptly to call lights and attend to patient needs or notify appropriate staff.
• Measure and record vital signs (blood pressure, pulse, temperature, oxygen saturation) and report abnormalities.
• Assist with repositioning, ambulation, and transfers.
• Support fall prevention and ensure safety during patient movement.
• Alert nursing staff to changes in patient behavior or condition requiring intervention beyond CNA scope.
• Maintain a safe environment for caregivers, patients, and guests.
• Follow infection prevention protocols; maintain cleanliness, disinfect equipment, and use PPE appropriately.
• Maintain competency in supportive care, operate equipment safely, and carry out nursing orders within scope.
• Document all care accurately in the electronic health record (EHR).
• Transport patients, blood, specimens, and other items as needed.
• Perform authorized duties such as NG suction, EKG lead placement, suctioning, traction adjustments, and CPM machine operation.
• Receive and transmit messages to appropriate destinations.
• Assist with data input using EMR, staffing and charge capture systems, and other administrative tasks.
• Stock nurse servers, maintain equipment, order non‑medical supplies, and assist with scheduling processes.
• Participate in continuous quality improvement and departmental activities.
• Promote patient independence, privacy, and rights to decide about care.
• Communicate effectively in writing and orally with caregivers, medical staff, patients, and guests.
• Identify work‑related problems and implement appropriate solutions within scope.
• Provide a therapeutic presence and support the organization’s vision, mission, and values.
• Support Lean principles and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Perform additional duties of similar complexity as required.
• For Home Health/Hospice/Wound caregivers only: drive vehicle safely, report to locations, and comply with agency guidelines.

Required:

Completion of the Oregon State Board of Nursing certification as a Certified Nursing Assistant and completion of the SCHS CNA training course within 45 days of hire.

• Certified Nursing Assistant with the Oregon State Board of Nursing.
• AHA Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider certification.
• Valid Oregon driver’s license and ability to meet SCHS driving requirements (for Home Health/Hospice/Wound caregivers only).

Preferred:
Experience as a CNA or in a patient care setting and experience in customer service and clerical duties.

• Interact with a diverse population and represent St.Charles Health System professionally.
• Work under pressure in a fast‑paced environment, multi‑task, and work independently.
• Must have strong teamwork and collaborative skills, attention to detail, excellent organizational skills, and proficiency with computer applications (EMR, MS Office).
• Must be able to wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).

• Standing and walking 75% or more; keyboard operation; clear speaking voice.
• Sitting 50% of the time; lifting 1–25 pounds.
• Driving vehicle for Home Health and Wound Caregivers.
• Occasional bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching overhead, and lifting 25–50 pounds.
• Rarely climbing stairs or ladder; never operating a motor vehicle in certain activities.
• Exposure to elemental factors rarely (wet/slippery area, chemical solution) and never (heat, cold, noise, dust, vibration).
• Blood‑borne pathogen exposure category risk.
