Job SummaryThe Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) provides patient and family focused care as part of the health care team in accordance with the St.Charles Health System mission and the Oregon State Board of Nursing standards. The role involves direct care of assigned patients with no direct supervisory responsibilities.
Essential Functions and Duties- Assist patients with activities of daily living (ADLs) such as bathing, dressing, feeding, toileting, and mobilization.
- Provide personal hygiene care and maintain patient dignity and comfort.
- Respond promptly to patient call lights and notify appropriate staff to ensure timely care.
- Accurately measure and record vital signs (blood pressure, pulse, temperature, oxygen saturation) and report abnormalities to the nursing team.
- Assist patients with repositioning in bed, ambulation, and transfers, supporting fall prevention and safety during movement.
- Alert nursing staff to changes in patient behavior or condition or when nursing intervention outside the CNA scope is required.
- Maintain a safe environment for caregivers, patients, and guests, and support the nursing team in harm reduction within authorized duties.
- Follow infection prevention protocols by keeping areas clean, disinfecting equipment, and using personal protective equipment (PPE) appropriately.
- Operate patient-support equipment safely and carry out nursing orders within CNA scope.
- Maintain thorough documentation in the electronic health record (EHR) adhering to hospital and regulatory standards.
- Transport patients, blood, specimens, and other items as needed.
- Perform additional authorized duties after training, including:
- Interrupting and re‑establishing nasogastric (NG) suction
- Placing electrodes or leads and running electrocardiogram (EKG) or telemetry
- Suctioning nose or oral pharynx
- Handling traction equipment and continuous passive motion (CPM) machines
- Conduct general administrative duties such as responding to messages, data entry in EMR, staffing systems, charge capture, and ordering supplies.
- Stock nurse servers and specialty carts, assist in equipment maintenance, and support scheduling and operational processes as directed.
- Participate in continuous quality improvement, daily huddles, and departmental activities to promote professional growth.
- Ensure clear communication with patients, families, and the care team, supporting patient independence and privacy.
- Support organizational values, Lean principles, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Commit to confidentiality, professionalism, and compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and policies.
- Provide customer service in a timely, efficient, and accurate manner.
- May perform additional duties of similar complexity as required or assigned.
- For Home Health/Hospice/Wound caregivers only: drive assigned vehicle safely to all required locations.
- Required:
As required by certification; complete the SCHS CNA training course within 45 days of hire.
- Required:
Certified Nursing Assistant with the Oregon State Board of Nursing. - AHA Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider certification.
- Valid Oregon driver’s license and ability to meet SCHS driving requirements (for Home Health/Hospice/Wound caregivers only).
- Preferred: CNA or other patient care experience.
- Preferred:
Customer service and clerical experience.
Must be able to wear appropriate PPE required to perform the job safely.
Physical Requirements- 75%/More:
Standing/walking, keyboard operation, audible speaking voice. - 50%:
Sitting, lifting/carrying/pushing or pulling 1‑25 pounds; use of motor vehicle for Home Health and Wound Caregivers. - 25%:
Bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, climbing ladder/stepstool, reaching overhead, lifting 25‑50 pounds. - 10%:
Climbing stairs; exposure to wet/slippery area, chemical solution.
Variable shift: 0700‑1930 and 1900‑0730; variable days of the week.
