DEPARTMENT SUMMARY

The Perioperative and Cardiovascular Services department provides specialized care to patients throughout their surgical and procedural experience.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Surgical Core Technician will be staffed in the Operating Room sterile cores, and act as a liaison with Sterile Processing and Supply Procurement and Delivery (SPD). This position is responsible for performing delegated activities to support the operating room team in the care of the surgical patient. Under the supervision of the Nurse Manager and Charge Nurse, the Surgical Core Technician prepares and delivers medical/surgical supplies, instruments and equipment for surgical procedures.

The Surgical Core Technician maintains inventory and storage of instruments/supplies in the core. This position manages multiple computer applications to assist with sterilization tracking and processes. This position does not directly manage any other caregivers.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES
  • Stage case carts for each room adjacent to assigned core and ensure all necessary supplies and instruments not sent from Central Supply/Sterile Processing are picked and available on the case cart in cooperation with Team Leaders, Circulators, and Surgical Technicians.
  • Maintain proper inventory and organization of instruments, peel packs, and sterile supplies during shift in cooperation with Central Supply/Sterile Processing.
  • Return unused supplies and instruments that are not stocked in core to appropriate department.
  • Answer core phones and provide support to rooms as necessary with procurement of supplies and instruments during cases.
  • Coordinate with charge RN and Sterile Processing with changes or add-ons in schedule.
  • Consult with surgical technicians and circulators with the preparation of case carts and rooms (i.e. holds, opens, additional last minute items, etc).
  • At end of shift organizes core, returns non-core inventory to respective departments, and gives hand-off report to either Charge RN or appropriate Team Leader.
  • Ensure a cleared cart is accessible to OR rooms by closing of case and placed directly outside OR room or push cart into room.
  • Ensure completed case cart for next case is placed outside of room for quick set-up.
  • Actively monitor elevator to retrieve and deliver items to rooms or other OR areas.
  • Supports the vision, mission and values of the organization in all respects.

EDUCATION

Required:

High School Diploma or GED. Preferred:
Graduate of a CAAHEP (Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs) accredited program, ABHES (Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools) accredited program or military surgical technologist program or a combination of education and experience.
