ICU Advanced Practice Provider (APP)

Reports to: ICU Medical Director

Department: Critical Care

Position Overview: The APP works as part of the Critical Care team under the direction and supervision of the attending intensivist, facilitating care of ICU patients from admission to discharge. The APP participates in daily team rounds and collaborates closely with physicians to develop and update care plans.

Essential Functions and Duties
  • Round on every ICU patient with the multidisciplinary team.
  • Document changes to the daily plan of care and update the Care Coordination Note.
  • Maintain an up‑to‑date active problem list.
  • Order labs, imaging, medications, and other studies as appropriate.
  • Consult specialists and communicate their findings to the staff.
  • Answer questions from RN/RT and staff, and place orders when necessary.
  • Teach staff and families about treatment plans and goals of care.
  • Facilitate family meetings in collaboration with the attending physician.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary rounds and review outside records.
  • Write histories, physical exams, progress notes, discharge summaries, and sign death certificates.
  • Evaluate emergency department consults for ICU admission and place admission orders.
  • Perform procedures consistent with privileges, such as central and arterial lines.
  • Discharge ICU patients with appropriate orders and follow‑up plans.
  • Transfer patients and update sign‑out lists for hospitalists.
  • Provide daily updates to patient families.
  • Precept PA and NP students rotating through the ICU.
  • Assess and treat acute and chronic medical conditions in collaboration with the attending intensivist.
  • Use a team‑based care model and share knowledge with team members.
  • Collaborate with residents and medical students as part of education and care.
Administrative Responsibilities
  • Document all patient care in the electronic medical record per policy and regulatory requirements.
  • Understand the SCHS organizational structure.
  • Participate in provider meetings and help shape policy.
  • Maintain current CME and licensure to satisfy board‑certification maintenance.
  • Keep all licenses and certifications current and unrestricted.
  • Maintain active privileges sufficient for job duties.

  • Deliver patient care that is timely, efficient and courteous.
  • Educate and counsel patients and families on health maintenance and preventive behaviors.
  • Communication: introduce yourself, use the patient's preferred name, listen actively, and use skillful communication techniques.
  • Comply with all laws, regulations, policies, and procedures.
Education and Experience

Required

Education:

Graduation from an accredited Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner program. Physician Assistant requires NCCPA certification;
Nurse Practitioner requires AANC certification.

Required Clinical

Experience:

Two years as an Advanced Practice Provider, with at least one year in the practice specialty.

Preferred Experience:

One year in critical care medicine.

Licensure and Certification
  • Unrestricted PA or NP licensure.
  • Unrestricted federal DEA number.
  • Unrestricted ability to participate in Medicare/Medicaid and other federal/state programs.
  • Valid driver’s license and meeting SCHS driving requirements.
  • Current BLS, ACLS, and ATLS certification.
Personal Protective Equipment

Must be able to wear the required PPE for safe job performance.

General Qualifications

  • Ability to multi‑task and work independently.
  • Attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency with electronic medical record systems and Microsoft Word/Excel.
