Licensed Practical​/Vocational Nurse

Summary

The Licensed Practical/Licensed Vocational Nurse (LPN/LVN) in Specialty Care demonstrates the ability to carry out assigned patient care based on patients’ conditions, select appropriate procedures and treatments, and recognize, report, and record relevant patient information. This position is located in a CBOC in Bend, Oregon.

• Citizenship:
  Must be a citizen of the United States. Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
• English Language Proficiency:
  Must be proficient in both spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d).
• Education:
  
  Graduate of a school of practical or vocational nursing approved by the appropriate State agency and/or accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) at the time the program was completed.
• Licensure:
  Full, active, current, and unrestricted licensure as a licensed practical or vocational nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (including Puerto Rico) or District of Columbia.
• Other:
  Covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees in this occupation).
• Grade Determinations:
• GS‑03:
  None beyond the basic requirements.
• GS‑04:
  Six months of qualifying experience as LPN or LVN, or graduation from an approved school and one year of experience, or one year of experience in a hospital outpatient clinic, nursing home, or other supervised medical‑nursing facility.
• GS‑05:
  Completion of at least one year of qualifying experience at the GS‑04 level or equivalent, plus demonstration of full range of practical nursing care to patients with various conditions.
• GS‑06:
  Completion of at least one year of qualifying experience at the GS‑05 level, plus full performance requirements for the GS‑05 level and proficiency in initiating, performing, and completing assigned patient care duties.
• Knowledge and ability to provide full range of practical nursing care, including medication administration, patient education, emergency response, and collaboration with the healthcare team.
• Ability to observe, identify, and respond to patient needs, including medication, equipment‑assisted care, and patient/family education.
• Skill in performing support duties for complex diagnostic tests and specialized procedures.
• Commitment to continual learning and improvement of nursing practice.

• Carry out assigned patient care based on patients’ conditions.
• Select appropriate order and sequence of procedures and treatments.
• Recognize, report, and record relevant patient information.
• Act as a member of the Specialty Care interdisciplinary care team, including acute rehabilitation, skilled care, hospice and palliative care, respite, and long‑term care.
• Work under the direction of the Registered Nurse, self‑directed in delivering individualized care to adult and elderly patients.
• Perform routine and complex patient care procedures (e.g., sterile dressings, wound packing, ostomy management, bladder catheter insertion and removal, tube feedings, IV starts, EKGs).
• Provide comprehensive patient teaching and adjust teaching modalities as needed.
• Recognize and consider emotional, cultural, spiritual, socio‑economic, and age‑related factors in patient care interventions.

  Monday – Friday, 7:00 am – 5:30 pm PST. No virtual location.
