Chief of Staff – Veterinary Hospital – oversees and supports the veterinary medical team to deliver high‑quality care and client service while driving business results.

Job Purpose and Function

The chief of staff manages the hospital to ensure top quality veterinary care, exceptional client service, associate engagement, and maximum productivity of the veterinary medical team. The role serves as a partner to the Practice Manager, drives operational excellence, and promotes the well‑being of pets and clients.

Salary range: $124,000 – $180,000.

Key Responsibilities
  • Leadership Duties (20%–30% of time)
  • Live and exemplify the Five Principles of Mars, Inc. within self and team.
  • Partner with the Practice Manager to run the hospital, train and supervise associates, and maintain compliance with Banfield guidelines.
  • Identify bottlenecks and devise solutions to smooth medical operations.
  • Recruit, coach, motivate, and discipline hospital associates when needed.
  • Develop and maintain associate veterinary schedules and continue education cycles.
  • Conduct regular team meetings, communicate business information, and foster a collaborative culture.
  • Create annual planning, budgeting, and productivity goals in partnership with senior leadership.
  • Ensure overall compliance with policies, regulations, and local/state/federal laws.
  • Provide leadership to other area hospitals as required.
  • Associate Veterinarian Duties (70%–80% of time)
  • Deliver preventive and diagnostic care, develop treatment plans, and communicate outcomes to clients.
  • Practice evidence‑based medicine, maintain thorough medical records, and adhere to state veterinary practice acts.
  • Lead the hospital team through the daily schedule, delegating tasks and improving efficiency.
  • Advocate for preventive care and Wellness Plans, and address client concerns.
  • Necessarily perform surgeries and other clinical procedures in line with Banfield protocols.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and organized clinical environment.
  • Achieve performance metrics set by medical and field leadership.
Qualifications and Competencies
  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM/VMD) or equivalent.
  • Veterinary license in good standing or eligibility to be licensed in the state of employment.
  • Minimum two years of clinical experience and 1–3 years of coaching or developing associate veterinarians.
  • Strong multi‑tasking, organizational, and problem‑solving abilities.
  • Proficiency with surgical procedures and medical equipment.
  • Excellent communication, conflict‑management, and leadership skills.
  • Integrity, initiative, flexibility, and resilience in high‑pressure environments.
  • Proficiency in computer systems and veterinary software.
Experience and Training

Minimum 2 years of clinical experience and 1–3 years of coaching or developing associate veterinarians. Must meet all required clinical competencies.

Special Working Conditions

Work may exceed 40 hours per week, including weekends and evenings. The environment has a moderate noise level and involves physical demands such as lifting up to 50 lbs. Exposure to pets, anesthesia, radiation, biological hazards, and controlled substances may occur. Some travel to other hospitals is required.
