Archaeologist - Cultural Resource Specialist
OverviewEnvironmental Science Associates (ESA) is a 100% employee-owned environmental consulting firm. We plan, design, permit, mitigate, and restore for projects across our communities, infrastructure systems, open spaces, and wildlands. We are 50 years strong in 21 offices across California, the Pacific Northwest, and the Southeastern United States.
ESA seeks a highly motivated Cultural Resource Specialist with 2-7 years of experience in leading field teams and projects, and writing reports to join our Northwest Cultural Resource Team. Strong preference for candidates located within a commutable distance to the Portland Metro area. Qualified candidates near Salem, Eugene, Bend or within a commutable distance of Portland areas will also be considered.
Qualified candidates must be open to occasional travel for site visits, projects, field work, and in-person team collaboration as needed.
Work samples may be requested as a step in the interview process.
Responsibilities- Monitor construction activities and identify archaeological resources.
- Effectively communicate with construction crews and project personnel.
- Write and maintain written daily survey, monitoring, recordation, and cataloging logs, including utilizing electronic data collection tools and GIS mapping applications.
- 2-7 years of field experience in archaeology, with knowledge of materials common to the region and experience in Oregon.
- Master’s degree or higher in archaeology/anthropology or related field.
- Secretary of Interior-Qualified Archaeologist and/or Oregon State-Qualified Archaeologist (or ability to obtain certification).
- Access to OARRA or eligibility to obtain access to OARRA.
- Experience leading field teams and projects; ability to write technical reports.
- Ability to use app-based software for field recording and mapping.
- Valid driver’s license and experience driving 4-wheel-drive vehicles off-road.
- Willingness to travel to remote work locations and work on active construction sites; capability to walk long distances carrying a backpack and lift at least 50 pounds.
- Comfort working outside in varied weather, remote/rural and urban environments; some early morning, late night, weekend work, and long hours may be required.
Preferred but not required: public speaking skills and prior lab experience.

Must have a valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle to perform survey and other work-related tasks.
