FIRE PREVENTION INSPECTOR I/II
Under general supervision, incumbents in the Fire Prevention Inspector I/II classifications perform initial and annual inspections of existing buildings and fire protection systems, and review of new construction and fire protection systems to ensure compliance with laws, ordinances and regulations pertaining to the control and prevention of fires; develop, organize and coordinate specific fire and life safety programs and services; issue fire permits;
and provide responsible administrative and technical assistance in support of city's Fire Prevention programs and its customers.
Appointment may be made at the Fire Prevention Inspector I or II level depending on qualifications. This recruitment will also establish an eligibility list that may be used to fill additional vacancies for up to one year.
Responsibilities- Assisting with and/or inspecting commercial, residential, educational and industrial occupancies for compliance with applicable codes and standards for fire prevention utilizing applicable safety practices; recommending appropriate corrective actions in response to noted hazards and violations.
- Basic plan review work.
- Assisting with and/or monitoring, coordinating, and participating in the follow-up to all code violations to ensure timely correction and/or appropriate penalties occur; issuing citations as necessary.
- Assisting with and/or implementing, managing and coordinating a variety of fire prevention programs, public education presentations, and vegetation management programs.
- Assisting with and/or inspecting new and existing construction projects and fire protection systems to ensure compliance with plans, specifications and applicable fire protection laws, ordinances, regulations and conditions of approval.
- Planning, developing, and/or conducting fire and life safety education programs; identifying learning objectives, training methods, materials and presentation requirements to meet and/or respond to community needs; coordinating and implementing special related programs and events.
- Writing, reviewing, recommending for purchase, and/or updates fire and life safety educational materials and presentations; preparing advertising and announcements for training and related programs; coordinating with media representatives as assigned; acting as a primary source of data and information related to city's fire and life safety programs.
- Assisting the Fire Prevention Division and/or administrative staff in research and/or data gathering activities; reviewing and interpreting data collected and preparing reports with recommendations based on findings.
- Compiling materials and assisting in the preparation of reports, manuals and publications which may include statistical data; calculating and monitoring data related to fire and life safety as assigned.
- May represent the Fire Department in matters related to assigned functions at Planning Commission, City Council and other related meetings to assist in the review of project proposals and related matters; may make public information presentations on behalf of the Department related to fire prevention.
- Operating office equipment such as personal computer, other office equipment, and designated software packages in the performance of work related data entry and records management as needed.
- Performing a variety of administrative support functions such as completion of forms, reports, and checklists; scheduling of fire prevention events and inspections; filing and recordkeeping of documents and other related materials.
- Other related duties may also be performed.
- Reviews and examines building construction plans and drawings and inspects residential, commercial, industrial buildings and facilities, and places of public assembly during construction and after occupancy to ensure compliance with all fire, life safety and health codes; maintains records of inspections for all buildings and assure inspection schedules are carried out.
- Issues violation notices and follow up as required to sections which relate to fire prevention, detection, and suppression; reports to building owners or tenants regarding violations and required corrective actions.
- Interprets and enforces policies, procedures, regulations, ordinances, and resolutions adopted by the City; provides technical assistance to contractors, architects, engineers developers and the public.
- Develops and provides public education to groups on fire safety, evacuation, fire suppression with portable equipment, use of fire alarms and fire suppression systems, and other means of reporting fires and other emergencies.
- Provides training to fire or city staff on prevention, investigation or related subjects. Develops and implements fire prevention policies and procedures, and life safety codes and ordinances as necessary.
