Laboratory Analyst - Chemist / Laboratory Technician
Job Description
The Laboratory Analyst - Chemist or Laboratory Technician supports analytical testing activities in a laboratory environment, ensuring that all testing and documentation are completed safely, legally, ethically, and in accordance with established procedures. This role focuses on receiving and processing samples, performing analytical tests using specialized instrumentation, maintaining accurate records, and contributing to the delivery of timely, accurate, and cost-effective services for internal and external clients.
Responsibilities
* Receive, examine, and log inbound samples for testing using the established login process to ensure accurate sample identification and traceability.
* Deliver test samples to the designated sample staging area in a timely and organized manner.
* Monitor the availability of laboratory supplies and reagents needed for testing processes and promptly communicate any supply needs to the Laboratory Manager.
* After demonstrating and documenting proficiency, perform analytical testing on samples and quality control specimens using specified methodologies and analytical instruments.
* Review test results against specifications, quality standards, and expected values to verify accuracy and reliability.
* When delegated, issue analytical results and reports to clients in a clear and professional manner.
* Prepare samples and quality control specimens according to standard procedures to ensure consistency and reliability in testing.
* Prepare and standardize reagents and solutions required for analytical methods and maintain proper labeling and documentation.
* Calibrate laboratory equipment and analytical instruments as needed to maintain accuracy and compliance with quality standards.
* Verify and communicate test results, making accurate entries into instrument logs, control charts, calibration records, laboratory worksheets, and other print or electronic media to ensure data validity and traceability.
* Maintain documentation, equipment, and work areas in a neat, orderly, and safe condition, following laboratory housekeeping and safety guidelines.
* Assist in the training of less experienced employees once sufficient proficiency is demonstrated and documented, supporting skill development within the team.
* Carry out all responsibilities in alignment with the company's Safety Policy and Procedures, Quality Management System, Ethics Policy, Environmental Management System, Vision and Strategy.
* Exercise good judgment, common sense, and diplomacy when interacting with colleagues and clients and when making decisions related to testing and laboratory operations.
Essential Skills
* Experience working in a laboratory environment, preferably with exposure to analytical testing processes.
* Knowledge of basic chemistry principles and laboratory practices, with the ability to apply them to routine analytical testing.
* Ability to work with analytical instruments, such as ICP and other chemistry-related equipment, following specified methodologies.
* Strong attention to detail for accurate sample login, data entry, documentation, and review of test results against specifications.
* Ability to follow written procedures, safety protocols, and quality management guidelines in a consistent and reliable manner.
* Capability to prepare samples, reagents, and solutions and to perform equipment calibration according to established methods.
* Effective communication skills to verify, document, and, when delegated, report analytical results to clients and colleagues.
* Demonstrated ability to maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area in a laboratory setting.
* Laboratory Analyst - Technician:
High school education or equivalent, with an advantage for candidates who have petroleum testing experience or formal chemistry education.
* Laboratory Analyst - Technician:
Minimum of two years of relevant experience required to perform U.S. Customs-related testing.
* Laboratory Analyst - Chemist:
Bachelor's degree in chemistry or a closely related discipline.

Skills & Qualifications
* Petroleum testing experience is advantageous for candidates in the Laboratory Technician track.
* Formal chemistry education beyond high school is beneficial for Laboratory Technicians and required for Laboratory Chemists.
* Experience working with analytical instruments, including ICP and other chemistry-based analytical tools, is highly valued.
* Familiarity with quality control specimens, control charts, and calibration records in a laboratory setting.
* Ability to support and train less experienced team members once proficient, contributing to a collaborative learning environment.
