Job Summary:

Lake Michigan College is establishing a pool of qualified candidates to be considered when part-time instructors are needed to teach Police Academy curriculum. Specific curriculum will be assigned by the Police Academy Director.

Hire date for curriculum development begins November 30, 2023. Instruction set to begin May 2024.

Essential Functions:

1. Instructors may be responsible for curriculum development and content as assigned by the Police Academy Director. The content must align with the MCOLES Basic Training Curriculum and Training Objectives.
2. Provides lesson plans, objectives, and identified outcomes for learning modules prior to presenting in the classroom.
3. Instructs students in basic police training along with related topics and skills.
4. Monitors and evaluates students’ performance to make suggestions/corrections for improvement and to ensure that they satisfy course standards, training requirements, and MCOLES state licensing standards.
5. Works individually and with other instructors to review and evaluate individual students and their progress.
6. Maintains accurate and complete student records as required.
7. Regular attendance on campus may be required for this position, and all instruction must be completed in the classroom. No instruction is offered online or remotely.

Accountabilities:

Under the direct supervision of the Department Chair, each Adjunct faculty member is
responsible for satisfying the educational, administrative, and fiscal requirements
inherent in his/her position.

Job Specifications:

1. All instructors must have a minimum of two (2) years’ experience as a certified law enforcement officer or other related criminal justice profession.

2. All instructors must have a minimum of an Associate degree in Criminal Justice or a related field OR must be certified to instruct in a specific content area. See below for content areas requiring specialized certification:
A. Legal Instruction:
All legal subjects must be taught by an attorney admitted to and in good standing with the Michigan Bar Association.
B. First Aid:
An instructor in first aid must be a qualified instructor trained and registered by a nationally recognized first aid training program (e.g., American Red Cross or American Heart Association) in order to be approved by MCOLES to instruct in this subject area.
C. Subject Control: A subject control instructor must have successfully completed an MCOLES recognized subject control instructor training course prior to instructing in this subject area. Instructors must maintain current certifications to continue to be recognized by MCOLES as an instructor.
D. Emergency Vehicle Operations:
An emergency vehicle operations instructor must have successfully completed an MCOLES recognized emergency vehicle operation instructor training course. Instructors must maintain current certifications, teaching status, or continuing education in the field to continue to be recognized by MCOLES as an instructor.
