JOB TITLE: Assistant Director of Special Education

SUPERVISOR: Director of Special Education

LOCATION: Central Administration

JOB SUMMARY

Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Supporting, developing and implementing individual objectives of each student; providing instruction for students consistent with state education code requirements; employing instructional techniques consistent with the needs and capabilities of students; establishing and maintaining an orderly and safe environment; evaluating each student's performance and communicating with parents.

JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • In collaboration with the Director of Special Education, determine the vision and goals for the BHAS SPED department
  • Provide guidance for compliance with Special Education laws and regulations
  • Provide SPED training to teachers, administrators and staff
  • Assist with SPED complaints
  • Represent the District in SPED meetings
  • Review and monitor SPED caseloads and deadlines
  • Support teachers with writing of IEP’s
  • Work in collaboration with the alignment of curriculum and instruction in the district.
  • Aid and support teachers and staff to implement school-wide positive behavior incentives to reduce the number of students who commit behavioral infractions.
  • Work cooperatively with classroom teachers who have mainstreamed special education students in regular classes, interpret the abilities and disabilities of these students to staff, and assist the student with regular class assignments.
  • Confer frequently with parents and professional staff members regarding the educational, social and personal problems of students.

  • MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master's Degree in Education.
  • Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate with appropriate endorsement
  • Possess or is eligible for valid Michigan Administrator's Certificate
  • Possess or qualify to acquire a Special Education Supervisor endorsement.
  • Have at least five (5) years of successful teaching experience.
  • Possess a broad knowledge of curriculum, curriculum development, and best instructional practices
  • Strong academic preparation and leadership ability
  • Ability to work effectively with others
  • Organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Strong communication skills
  • A valid driver’s license
  • Proven ability to meet the challenges of an urban school district

  • TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

    200-day contract; 40 hours per week

    $66,650 - $75,250; based on education and experience

    Salary based on education and experience pursuant to the Benton Harbor Area School Board policies and collective bargaining
