Job SummaryA candidate in this position would be responsible for instructing students in the course of study developed by the BHAS School District; developing physical education lesson plans; establishing and maintaining a gym and classroom climate conducive to learning; identifying student needs, and assisting in helping solve health, fitness, attitude, and learning problems.
Minimum Qualifications- Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate with appropriate physical education endorsement (MB or MX)
- Have at least two (2) years of successful teaching experience.
- Familiarity with virtual/online learning.
- Ability to incorporate technology into the physical education environment.
- Strong academic preparation and leadership ability.
- Strong communication skills.
- Proven ability to meet the challenges of an urban school district
- Master's degree in Education or Physical Education
- Five (5) years of successful teaching experience
- Teach physical education, health, cooperative games, team sports, lifelong fitness, and other appropriate learning activities, utilizing the course of study adopted by the Board of Education.
- Develop physical education lesson plans and instructional materials and provide individualized and small-group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs and physical abilities of each student.
- Establish and maintain standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional and safe learning environment in the gymnasium, locker rooms, and athletic fields.
- Evaluate students' physical, academic, and social growth, keep appropriate records, and prepare progress reports.
- Communicate with parents through conferences and other means, to discuss student progress.
- Identify students' needs and cooperate with other professionals and support staff in assessing and helping students solve health, attitude, and learning problems.
- Maintain required inventory records of athletic equipment and instructional materials.
- Administer fitness testing and group-standardized tests following the district-testing program.
- Participate in district professional development programs as required.
- Create an effective environment for learning through functional, attractive displays, and bulletin boards.
- Supervise students in out-of-classroom activities as assigned.
- Participate in curriculum development programs as required.
- Participate in faculty committees and the sponsorship of student activities or intramural sports.
- Represent the school district in a positive manner.
- Know and follow school district policy and chain of command. Regular and reliable attendance is an essential job duty.
- Perform other duties assigned by the Superintendent or designee.

Salary based on education and experience pursuant to the Benton Harbor Area School Board policies and collective bargaining agreement for any position that falls under collective bargaining.
EvaluationThe performance of this job will be evaluated by the Building Principal.
Funding SourceIf this position is funded using Title dollars, federal regulations do not allow a promise of employment beyond the current year of allocated funds. If this position is funded using state program dollars, the district is not obligated to fund the position beyond the current year's allocation. This position, at any time, may be dissolved based on funding availability and data collected from a comprehensive needs assessment.
