JOB TITLE: Choir Teacher:
Fair Plain Middle and Benton Harbor High School

SUPERVISOR: Building Principal

LOCATION: Fair Plain Middle and Benton Harbor High School

JOB SUMMARY

We are looking for a creative, flexible, and musically talented Choir Teacher to join our team of seasoned educators. The Choir Teacher’s responsibilities include selecting diverse repertoire, preparing vocal lessons, and providing developmentally appropriate instruction on vocal techniques and music theory. You should be able to cultivate a supportive ensemble environment where learners interact with respect. To be successful, you should be able to inspire a love of music, encourage self-expression, and lead high-quality vocal performances.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Certification: Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate with appropriate K-12 Music endorsement (JQ or JX)
  • Experience: Have at least two (2) years of successful teaching experience.
  • Technology: Familiarity with virtual/online learning and the ability to incorporate music technology into the classroom.
  • Leadership: Strong academic preparation and leadership ability.
  • Communication: Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Context: Proven ability to meet the challenges of an urban school district.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master's degree in Music Education or Choral Conducting.
  • Five (5) years of successful teaching experience.
JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSABILITIES
  • Instructional Delivery: Teach vocal music and literacy utilizing the course of study adopted by the District.
  • Lesson Planning: Develop lesson plans and instructional materials; provide individualized and small-group vocal coaching to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student.
  • Classroom Management: Establish and maintain standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional and harmonious learning environment.
  • Evaluation: Evaluate students’ musical and social growth, keep appropriate records, and prepare progress reports.
  • Performance: Direct seasonal concerts, festivals, and community performances; organize all logistics for choral events.
  • Student Support: Identify students’ needs and cooperate with other professionals to help students solve health, attitude, and learning problems.
  • Inventory: Maintain required inventory records of sheet music, instruments (pianos/keyboards), and instructional materials.
  • Professionalism: Participate in district professional development, faculty committees, and curriculum development programs as required.
  • Environment: Create an effective learning environment through functional, attractive musical displays and bulletin boards.
  • Attendance: Regular and reliable attendance is an essential job duty.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

Salary based on education and experience pursuant to the Benton Harbor Area School Board policies and collective bargaining agreement.

EVALUATION

The performance of this job will be evaluated by the Building Principals.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand (often for long periods during conducting), walk, sit, talk, and hear. Specific vision abilities required include close vision and the ability to read musical scores. This position involves occasional evening and weekend commitments for performances.
