JOB TITLE: Elementary Music Teacher
SUPERVISOR: Building Principal
LOCATION: DEC, MLK and FPE
JOB SUMMARYWe are looking for a creative, high-energy Elementary Music Teacher to join our team of educators. The music teacher's responsibilities include introducing young learners to the joy of music, sourcing classroom instruments (such as recorders and percussion), and providing developmentally appropriate instruction on rhythm, melody, and music appreciation. You should be able to create a classroom environment that is both structured and playful, ensuring that students interact in a supportive and respectful manner.
To be successful, you should be able to spark a lifelong interest in the arts and encourage self-expression through song, movement, and play.
- Certification: Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate with appropriate K-12 Music endorsement (JQ or JX)
- Experience: Have at least two (2) years of successful teaching experience (early childhood or elementary experience preferred).
- Technology: Familiarity with virtual/online learning and ability to incorporate interactive music software or digital tools into the classroom.
- Leadership: Strong academic preparation and the ability to manage large groups of elementary-age children.
- Communication: Strong communication skills with students, staff, and families.
- Context: Proven ability to meet the challenges of an urban school district.
- Master's degree in Music Education.
- Five (5) years of successful teaching experience.
- Training in specific elementary music pedagogies (e.g., Kodály, Orff Schulwerk, or Dalcroze).
- Instructional Delivery: Teach general music and rhythmic literacy utilizing the course of study adopted by the District.
- Lesson Planning: Develop engaging lesson plans that incorporate singing, dancing, and instrument play; provide individualized instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners.
- Classroom Management: Establish and maintain positive standards of behavior that foster a safe and "brave" space for performance and creativity.
- Evaluation: Evaluate students' academic and social-emotional growth through musical milestones and prepare progress reports.
- Performance: Direct elementary school programs, holiday performances, or grade-level assemblies that showcase student talent.
- Collaboration: Identify students' needs and cooperate with classroom teachers and support staff to integrate music with core subjects like literacy and math.
- Inventory: Maintain required inventory records of instruments, sheet music, and classroom instructional materials.
- Professionalism: Participate in district professional development, faculty committees, and school-wide events.
- Environment: Create a vibrant learning environment with functional, attractive music-themed displays and bulletin boards.
- Attendance: Regular and reliable attendance is an essential job duty.

Salary based on education and experience pursuant to the Benton Harbor Area School Board policies and collective bargaining agreement.
EVALUATIONThe performance of this job will be evaluated by the Building Principal.
PHYSICAL DEMANDSWhile performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, move/dance with students, sit on the floor, and play instruments. The teacher must have the physical stamina to lead high-energy classes back-to-back throughout the school day.
