Heavy Equipment Mechanic

As a heavy equipment mechanic with the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), you'll play a critical role in maintaining and repairing the fleet that keeps Michigan moving. Based out of the Coloma Garage, you'll perform a full range of maintenance and repair work on heavy-duty vehicles and equipment - everything from preventive maintenance to advanced diagnostics. You'll also use computerized systems to document repairs, prepare work orders and estimate materials and costs.

You'll have access to the tools you need to succeed; MDOT provides the necessary equipment so you can focus on the work, not the expense of building your own toolbox. In addition to working in the shop, you'll operate large vehicles and trailer combinations (26,001-plus gross vehicle weight rating) to road-test equipment and ensure repairs meet performance and safety standards.

As the next heavy equipment mechanic, you would be responsible for:

• Performing maintenance and repair activities on various pieces of heavy equipment, including but not limited to heavy-duty trucks and semi-tractors, back hoes, skid steer and articulating loaders, rotary screw compressors, graders, aerial towers, spray equipment, cement saws and trailers.
• Installing, servicing, repairing and maintaining material spreaders, underbody blades, dump bodies, snowplows and systems associated with snowplow trucks.
• Utilizing computers and computerized software for diagnosis and work order data entry
• Fabricating, modifying and installing special equipment or replacement parts using welders (MIG and TIG), acetylene torch sets, plasma cutters, metal cutting saws, mills and lathes.
• Servicing, repairing and maintaining components of aerial man-lifts and cranes.
• Performing inspections outlined in the owner's manuals, American National Standards Institute and Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA) regulations.

The "Salary" listed above is a range that reflects the minimum rate at the entry (8) level through the maximum rate at the advanced (11) level. Based on education and experience, candidates will be reviewed to determine what level they are qualified for.
