Heavy Equipment Mechanic, Maintenance Technician / Mechanic, General Labor, Diesel Mechanic
Do you enjoy working with your hands, solving complex mechanical problems and keeping essential equipment running at its best? Are you someone who takes pride in diagnosing issues and getting vehicles back on the road safely and efficiently?
As a heavy equipment mechanic with the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), you’ll play a critical role in maintaining and repairing the fleet that keeps Michigan moving. Based out of the Coloma Garage, you’ll perform a full range of maintenance and repair work on heavy‑duty vehicles and equipment – everything from preventive maintenance to advanced diagnostics. You’ll also use computerized systems to document repairs, prepare work orders and estimate materials and costs.
You’ll have access to the tools you need to succeed; MDOT provides the necessary equipment so you can focus on the work, not the expense of building your own toolbox. In addition to working in the shop, you’ll operate large vehicles and trailer combinations (26,001‑plus gross vehicle weight rating) to road‑test equipment and ensure repairs meet performance and safety standards.
If you’re looking for a hands‑on career where your skills directly impact communities and infrastructure, this is your opportunity to make a difference.
