Benton Township Housing Commission is looking for a dedicated and compassionate Housing Assistant to join our team in Benton Harbor, MI. Responsibilities:- Assist applicants and residents with housing applications, eligibility screenings, and program enrollment
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date resident files, records, and housing databases
- Respond to resident inquiries, complaints, and service requests in a timely and professional manner
- Support housing inspections, lease signings, and unit turnover processes
- Coordinate with social service agencies and community partners to connect residents with supportive resources
- Process rent payments, track accounts, and assist with financial reporting tasks
- Ensure compliance with HUD regulations, fair housing laws, and commission policies
- High school diploma or GED required; associate's or bachelor's degree in social services, public administration, or related field preferred
- Prior experience in housing, property management, social services, or public sector administration
- Knowledge of HUD programs, Section 8/Housing Choice Voucher, or public housing regulations is a plus
- Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and accuracy in recordkeeping
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with a customer-service mindset
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and ability to learn housing management software
- Ability to handle sensitive information with confidentiality and professionalism
