Safety Sensitive:
This position is designated as safety/security sensitive and is subject to pre-employment, reasonable suspicion and random drug and alcohol screening.
Functions as a general mechanic in all phases of maintenance and repair of gasoline and diesel driven automotive and related equipment as well as the Road Department shop. Work ranges from general maintenance and repair to complete overhauls of engines and transmissions, electrical wiring, refrigeration and fabrication. Employees work under general supervision, using independent judgment as to method of repair after receiving a repair order.
A supervisor checks the work during its progress and gives final inspection at the completion of the job. This position is designated as a safety sensitive position as defined by Act 593 of 2017.
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty mentioned satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCEHigh School Diploma or GED with knowledge of a specialized field (however acquired), such as automotive preventive maintenance, proficiency in using hand tools, power tools, etc. Equivalent of four years in high school, plus night, trade extension, or correspondence school specialized training, equal to two years of college, plus 7 years related experience and/or training, and 12 to 18 months related management experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
REQUIREDCERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
- Required to pass a physical and pre-employment drug screen and random drug screens throughout employment with Saline County;
- Possess a Class A Commercial Driver’s License;
- Registered under the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse and give consent to Saline County or Saline County’s third‑party administrator to conduct a full query to check if prospective employees are prohibited from performing safety‑sensitive functions such as operating commercial motor vehicles due to an unresolved drug and alcohol program violation. An annual query is conducted on all CDL employees.
- Certifications include vehicles up to an including heavy duty and some certifications require on the job training for up to 3 years before the employee can apply for training.
