Job Goal

To provide all students with an enriched media environment containing a wide variety and range of materials that will invite intellectual growth and to aid all students in acquiring the skills needed to take full advantage of media resources.

Performance Responsibilities
  • Operates and supervises the Media Center to which assigned.
  • Evaluates, selects, and requisitions new media materials.
  • Assists teachers in the selection of media materials, and makes media materials available to supplement the instructional program.
  • Informs teachers and other staff members concerning the use and availability of new materials.
  • Maintains a comprehensive and efficient system for cataloging all media materials, and instructs teachers and students on use of the system.
  • Arranges for interlibrary loan of materials of interest and use to teachers.
  • Works with teachers in planning those assignments likely to lead to extended use of media resources.
  • Promotes appropriate conduct of students using media facilities.
  • Helps students to develop habits of independent reference work and to develop skill in the use of reference materials in relation to planned assignments.
  • Presents and discusses materials with a class studying a particular topic, on the invitation of the teacher.
  • Participates in curriculum meetings and serves on the book selection committee.
  • Gives guidance, particularly to those students who have special reading problems or intellectual interests.
  • Arranges frequently-changing book-related displays and exhibits likely to interest the library's patrons.
  • Assists the principals in preparing and administering the media budget.
  • Supervises media assistant(s) in the performance of duties.
  • Participates actively in library and other educational and professional associations on the local, regional, state and national level.
  • Weeds obsolete and worn materials from the collections.
  • Supervises the clerical routines necessary for the smooth operation of the media center.
  • Explores and recommends new educational technology to enhance the curriculum.
  • Ensures that A-V equipment is in operable condition; reports maintenance needs to principal or designee.
  • Performs other tasks as requested by Principal or Superintendent.
  • Coordinates film, tapes, and other materials distribution and collection within the school.
  • Instructs and assists teachers and students in the proper use and operation of equipment.
  • Sets up and arranges for operative audiovisual equipment for special programs and meetings.
  • Assigns equipment to classrooms as requested.
  • Develops and maintains inventory of all audiovisual equipment permanently assigned to the school.
  • Orders and stocks supplies and parts needed for audiovisual equipment.
  • Performs minor repairs and arranges for major repairs of equipment.
  • Maintains copying and duplicating machines for the office staff.
  • Establishes efficient procedures for the processing of requests for materials and for maintenance of equipment.
  • Conducts a continuous evaluation of the effectiveness with which audiovisual materials are used by classroom teachers.
  • Establishes and administers a system for recording the use of instructional materials and audiovisual equipment.
  • Serves as a consultant to all curriculum committees.
  • Keeps informed of new developments and trends in the field of multimedia in order that innovations and new materials may be tried.

The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
