Founded in 2021, AWSOM is a nonprofit four‑year MD program that enhances traditional medical education with the arts, humanities, and whole health principles. The school’s culture embraces self‑care to empower students to care for their own well‑being as well as their patients. The state‑of‑the‑art medical education facility is located on the Crystal Bridges campus in Bentonville, Arkansas.

About The Position

The Clinical Education Faculty helps develop, integrate, and teach the clinical curriculum as part of an interdisciplinary team to ensure students receive broad‑based training experience. Responsibilities include designing, revising, delivering, and coordinating the curriculum and promoting its integration across all curricular phases. The position supports the Director of Clinical Integration Education in curriculum development related to instruction, evaluation, and assessment. This role also involves direct student instruction, providing feedback, using educational technology, driving curriculum innovation, and assessing student performance.

Faculty and staff members will contribute to the development and rollout of the ARCHES curriculum, built on evidence‑based approaches to teaching and learning. Six core elements will be interwoven throughout the four‑year curriculum:

  • Art of Healing
  • Research
  • Clinical
  • Health Systems Science
  • Embracing Whole Health
  • Science of Medicine

This is a non‑tenure track full‑time faculty position (FTE up to 1.0, negotiable).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Develop curriculum – oversee the development and integration of all content tied to pre‑clerkship clinical education, including clinically relevant narratives and assessment tools such as NBME‑style multiple‑choice questions and active learning assessment.
  • Teach, instruct, and facilitate – actively engage in student instruction, developing and delivering content using active learning methodologies. Collaborate with faculty to create, deliver, and teach the ARCHES curriculum and facilitate small and large group active learning sessions.
  • Assess and evaluate – create learning objectives related to clinical sciences, map them to the curriculum, and use appropriate metrics to ensure students meet objectives. Work collaboratively with faculty and staff for continuous quality improvement of courses, sessions, activities, and assessments.
  • Serve as course director or co‑director for an organ‑systems curriculum course.
  • Support integration efforts with colleagues to ensure appropriate representation of the clinical education curricular thread across the curriculum.
  • Co‑develop and facilitate ARCHES cases as needed.
  • Collaborate with the Assistant Dean for Clinical Education and Director of Clinical Integration Education to develop and deliver pre‑clerkship clinical curriculum.
  • Participate in professional development programs to enhance teaching, educational, and other skills needed to execute responsibilities.
  • Actively serve in leadership and group membership within the medical school (e.g., Curriculum Committee, Admissions Committee).
  • Abide by LCME standards and AWSOM policies.

Qualifications and Requirements
  • MD or D.O. degree, required.
  • Current or prior clinical practice as a physician within the United States, required.
  • Greater than two (2) years of experience in an accredited undergraduate medical education or postgraduate level education program, preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience and expertise in medical education, including curriculum development, assessment tool formulation, and clinical education delivery, preferred.
  • Experience designing, delivering, and evaluating integrated clinical education courses, preferred.
