Juvenile Officer Supervisor

The Juvenile Officer Supervisor (JOS) serves directly under the Chief Probation Officer and is responsible for the daily supervision and training of the Juvenile Officers (Probation and Intake). The Supervisor will continually work with the Juvenile Officers to enhance their capability to effectively utilize their training, knowledge, and judgment to analyze situations and make major subjective critical decisions related to the needs of the juvenile and family with minimum supervision.

The JOS must be a positive leader in the department and be able to guide and inspire others to share the goals and philosophy of the office. Additionally, the supervisor may carry a minimum caseload and perform all the duties as set forth in the Juvenile Probation Officer or Juvenile Intake Officer Job Description.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1. On call 24/7/365 for staff support, staff shortage, and organizational management; this includes weekends and during the night. Officers must respond to situations immediately and independently. They must subjectively determine the proper course of action, which often includes out-of- home placement of the juvenile. If needed, the Juvenile Officer Supervisor must be available to counsel and/or guide the officers to ensure that all policies and procedures are properly followed.

2. Maintain confidentiality pursuant to AR Code Annotated 9-27-309.

3. Interpret and abide by the Juvenile Code and other state and federal laws.

4. Supervise Juvenile Officers and team leads in such a manner that promotes independent decision making and problem-solving skills.

5. Responsible for the training protocol, modules, or curriculum with the team leads of new officers in the department. The training will include, but not limited to, departmental policies and procedures and state and federal laws pertaining to the Juvenile Probation Officer and Juvenile Intake Officer job description.

6. Conduct staff meetings, monitor timecards, monitor annual and sick leave accruals, conduct yearly evaluations and mediate personnel conflicts.

7. Monitor caseloads to ensure compliance with the Juvenile Code and office policy. Monitoring of caseloads will include auditing case files, data entry, creating and reviewing various reports related to the supervision of juveniles on a regular basis. JOS ensures that the cases are adequately distributed between the officers. When all caseloads are above the maximum requirement, the JOS will handle the overflow of cases on a temporary basis.

8. Serve as a back-up to other JOS during their absence or during a transition period of hiring new personnel, ensuring the absent officer's caseload is covered.

9. The JOS may carry a caseload.

10. Keep Chief Probation Officer apprised of any progress or regress within their team.

11. Assist the Chief Probation Officer in the hiring of new employees.

12. Assist the Chief Probation Officer in developing office procedures and policies incompliance with the Juvenile Code to correlate with the goals and philosophy of the Juvenile Probation Office.

13. Assist the Chief Probation Officer in developing and maintaining current job descriptions.

14. Assist the Chief Probation Officer with data regarding programing and other areas of interest. Ensure all programing offered by the juvenile court is scheduled and covered in the absence of scheduled staff.

15. Assist the Chief Probation Officer with JDAI duties and quarterly meetings by being present at these meetings to take minutes and bring in information for the board and to lead sub-committees throughout the county.

16. Other duties as assigned.

Qualification Requirements:

The Juvenile Officer Supervisor:

• Must be able to effectively train, evaluate, and make recommendations for additional training needs for new Officers. In addition, to these skills the incumbent must serve in the capacity of Juvenile Officer and meet all the qualification requirements.
