Position: Crew Leader Street

Street Department Crew Leader

Performs in a supervisory capacity over Heavy Equipment Operators and operates all equipment in the street department assuring a safe and well-maintained street system for the City. Works on construction projects, usually working in utility capacity, by transferring from one task to another where demands require supervision of subordinates and the ability to work without close supervision by performing the following duties.

Reporting relationships, work assignments, and work schedules may be subject to change in order to meet City needs or operational requirements. Attendance at work and the ability to get along with the public, supervisors, and co-workers are essential elements of this position. Other duties may be assigned.

Prepares and assigns duties to a crew under his/her supervision with routine verbal and/or written data, as well as exchanging information related to work activities with other department personnel.

Maintains the upkeep of grounds, equipment, buildings and vehicles associated with the Street Department.

Assists in the training of personnel on operation, repair and preventative maintenance of equipment.

Uses independent judgement in performing day to day duties, with written or oral assignments received from the Street Department Manager or the Assistant Street Department Manager.

Follows and promotes established safety policies.

Keeps a daily written diary of all work activities to include but not limited to personnel, equipment used, work accomplished and weather conditions to be turned in weekly to the Assistant Street Department Manager.

Assists in the development of good public relations.

May be required to work standby at the request of the Street Department Manager or the Assistant Street Department Manager.

Operates in a satisfactory manner all equipment used in daily operations by the Street Department.

Assists in Performance Evaluations for crew members.

Measures distances from grade stakes, drives stakes, and stretches tight line.

Bolts, nails, aligns, and blocks up under forms.

Signals operators of construction equipment to facilitate alignment, movement, and adjustment of machinery to conform to grade specifications.

Levels earth to fine grade specifications.

Mixes concrete. Smoothes and finishes freshly poured cement or concrete.

Positions, joins, aligns, and seals pipe sections.

Erects scaffolding, shoring, and braces.

Mops, brushes, or spreads paints or bituminous compounds over surfaces for protection.

Sprays materials such as water, sand, steam, vinyl, paint, or stucco through hose to clean, coat, or seal surfaces.

Applies caulking compounds by hand or with caulking gun to seal crevices.

Demolishes buildings, saws lumber, dismantles forms, removes projections from concrete, mounts pipe hangers, and cuts and attaches insulating material.

Responsible for maintenance of work equipment as necessary.

Collects and prepares data for use in street engineering designs.

Approves timesheets for assigned crew members.

Performs other related duties as required.

This position has no direct reports. Oversees the daily work of 3-5 employees in the street department. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and five (5) years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.

Able to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to walk; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to sit and taste or smell.
