Description:
Applicants with a strong interest in computing and its relationship to society are encouraged to apply for a tenure track assistant professor in Computer Science at Berea College, starting in August 2026. Successful candidates will demonstrate enthusiasm for learning to teach and conduct scholarship in an interdisciplinary, liberal arts context, and a commitment to building a diverse community. The department uses innovative, student-centered pedagogies, especially active and engaged learning techniques in a setting which places high value on engaging students from traditionally underrepresented groups in computing.
Colleagues excited about teaching at all levels of undergraduate courses will have the flexibility and support needed to teach established courses and to build new, interesting courses in their area of specialization utilizing highly flexible spaces in our brand-new Computing, Media, and IT (CMIT) building. The College also provides support for launching a research agenda, typically conducted with undergraduate students.
Applicants with a Master in Computer Science or a related field and significant industry experience may be considered for a continuing non-tenurable faculty position.
Computer Science has become one of the largest majors at the College and is staffed by a collegial set of faculty and staff who mentor and work with students as teaching assistants, lab assistants, and student software developers in the College's work study program. As instructors, advisors, and work supervisors, our connections with students have created a strong network of alumni that remain connected to the department and help to mentor our students professionally.
All specialty areas are welcome, especially in areas of strong student interest including artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and computer science education. Applicants should submit a cover letter, a current curriculum vitae, a teaching philosophy, graduate transcripts, and contact information for three references. Review of applications will begin October 1, 2025, and continue until the position is filled.
