Overview

The Coordinator serves as the primary architect of success for post-traditional students (aged 25+), student parents, and married/partnered students. This position will maximize cross-departmental collaboration by focusing on increasing retention, persistence, and degree completion. Through a combination of academic advising, coaching, mentorship, and resource navigation, the Coordinator ensures that life circumstances do not become barriers to graduation. This role serves as a bridge between the student and essential services (campus, local, state, and federal) and builds vibrant peer-to-peer communities that foster a sense of belonging and care.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and execute evidence-based initiatives specifically designed to increase the completion rates of post-traditional and student-parent populations, monitoring progress through data-driven success markers.
  • Provide high-touch academic advising, career coaching, and mentorship to help students navigate the complexities of balancing rigorous academics with professional and family life.
  • Facilitate the creation of "affinity communities" where post-traditional students and parents can engage in peer-to-peer support, social connection, and collective care.
  • Serve as the campus expert on wraparound services, assisting students in accessing local, state, and federal support systems, including SNAP, childcare, and other critical community-based resources.
  • Collaborate with Residential Education to support the success of families living in the Eco Village, serving as a liaison for student-centered programming.
  • Maintain a high-visibility presence on campus, partnering regularly with Campus Life, the Black Cultural Center, Espacio Cultural Latinx, and Counseling Services to ensure inclusive programming and advocacy.
  • Hire, train, and mentor student labor positions, upholding the Fourth Great Commitment to develop students’ professional acumen and administrative skills through the lens of student advocacy.
  • Serve as a vocal advocate on institutional committees to ensure campus policies, scheduling, and physical spaces are accessible and welcoming to students with diverse life commitments.
  • Proactively research, author, and secure external grant opportunities and alternative funding streams to expand program capacity, enhance specialized student services, and ensure the long-term sustainability of success initiatives for post-traditional and student-parent populations.
  • In support of Berea College’s commitments, supervise student labor, promoting the student labor program and developing students’ workplace acumen and tangible work experience. See Labor Program Goals for details.
Education
  • Bachelor’s degree in Student Affairs, Higher Education, Counseling, Social Work, or a related field.
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
Experience
  • 1-2 years of experience in student success, academic advising, counseling, or case management.
  • Demonstrated experience working with adult learners, student parents, or veterans in an advocacy capacity.
  • Proven ability to work effectively across college departments.
  • Established problem solving and conflict resolution experience.
  • Exceptional team leadership and supervisory experience.
  • Demonstrated adaptability to continual change and growth.
