Department

The ASUC Student Union is a department within the Division of Student Affairs and is the administrative & advising support arm of the ASUC (Associated Students of the University of California) Student Government. It serves all students, faculty, staff, and visitors seeking to create and experience an inclusive campus community, thereby enhancing the student experience at UC Berkeley.

Facility Operations

The Student Union Facilities Maintenance & Operations (SUFMO) manages and operates multiple facilities including the MLK Jr. Student Union, Eshleman Hall, Anthony Hall, and Anna Head Alumnae Hall.

Position Summary

The Facilities Coordinator facilitates building‑related services and safety matters for occupants, visitors, and event venues within the ASUC Student Union. The role manages, organizes, and oversees multiple operational activities, including space planning, general maintenance, and call‑center triage for repair services. The Facilities Coordinator also provides student staff support and coordinates the development of procedures, policies, and communications related to infrastructure and safety, while offering expertise in safety and security and a high level of customer service.

Responsibilities
  • Support the Student Union building operations.
  • May act as Building Coordinator for organization emergency/disaster preparedness, incident response, and de‑escalation.
  • May be asked to work day or swing shift hours.
  • Provide excellent customer service to event clients and building occupants.
  • Ensure smooth‑running effective events and proper use of the building amenities, including resolving problems promptly with tact, sensitivity, discretion, and political acumen.
  • Coordinate, monitor, and track all maintenance, custodial, and service requests from campus Facilities Services and outside vendors for assigned facilities and event spaces.
  • Conduct regular rounds to inspect areas for security, fire, and accident hazards, and take appropriate action as required; report infractions of fire and building codes, building rules, and other irregularities to management.
  • Represent the department on safety, emergency preparedness, ergonomic, and other organizational committees.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA/EH&S regulations and state or organization policies and procedures.
  • Work to implement safety and emergency preparedness policies and procedures with staff, including maintaining first‑aid supplies, fire extinguishers, and other safety equipment.
  • Direct student work and assign daily duties for the Facilities student teams; serve as next‑level support for escalated student staff issues.
Required Qualifications
  • Working knowledge of practices and procedures relating to facility maintenance and operational support.
  • Active listening, interpersonal communication, and problem‑solving skills to effectively resolve questions, concerns, and issues and ensure productive relationships.
  • Demonstrated conflict resolution and/or de‑escalation experience.
  • Experience leading student staff.
  • Capability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Written communication skills to prepare correspondence, reports, policies, procedures, and training documents.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines in a stressful environment.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage multiple projects with competing deadlines and meet project deadlines within budget and time constraints.
Education / Training
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related area and/or equivalent experience and training.
