Departmental Overview

The Department of Theater, Dance, and Performance Studies (TDPS) teaches performance as a mode of critical inquiry, creative expression, and public engagement. Through performance training and research, we create liberal arts graduates with expanded analytical, technical, and imaginative capacities. As a public institution, we make diversity and inclusion a key part of our teaching, art making, and public programming.

Position Summary

The Costume Stock Coordinator and Wardrobe Supervisor is a part‑time position within the Department of Theater, Dance, and Performance Studies. The role combines core responsibilities in costume curation and wardrobe oversight under the general supervision of the Costume Shop Director.

Responsibilities
  • Costume Stock Curation (45%) – Maintain, organize, store, and preserve the department’s costume collection, update inventory listings, and establish safe preservation procedures. Handle receipt, laundering, labeling, and database entry for returned items; manage rental/loan records; supervise and train students in costume curation practices.
  • Wardrobe Oversight (50%) – Create and maintain wardrobe run sheets and related paperwork; attend production meetings, rehearsals, and technical runs; manage dressing room assignments and coordinating hair, makeup, and wig supplies; instruct and lead students in wardrobe practices for live theater.
  • Costume Shop Assistance (5%) – Assist with build and assembly of costumes and properties, fit, cut, and finish garments from patterns, and maintain a neat and safe shop environment.
Required Qualifications
  • Significant knowledge of fashion and costume history, period, and style.
  • Knowledge of curatorial techniques, cataloging, record‑keeping, and research methods.
  • Knowledge of preservation and storage techniques, especially for fabrics and soft goods.
  • Proficiency in costume shop tools and safe theater operations.
  • Understanding of theater practice including patterning, cutting, fitting, draping, stitching, finishing, and theatrical makeup, along with special effects.
  • Two years of college education and three years of experience in theater production, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of university policies related to procurement, environmental health and safety, and security.
  • Working knowledge of building codes, OSHA, and fire safety regulations.
  • Familiarity with makeup, hair, and wig application techniques for diverse skin and hair types.
Salary & Benefits

Hourly range: $37.50 (Step 1) – $42.05 (Step 3.5). This is a non‑exempt, bi‑weekly paid, part‑time (20 hours/week) career position eligible for UC benefits under California law. Compensation is based on final candidate qualifications and experience.
