OverviewWe seek a dynamic Director of Motion Graphics & Design to lead the re‑imagined Strawberry Canyon Studios within the Athletics Department. The role drives brand storytelling across digital platforms, traditional marketing, and in‑venue video boards, leveraging emerging technologies such as Generative AI to speed and scale content production while maintaining brand guidelines.
Position SummaryAs a key member of the Athletics Department, the Director conceptualizes and executes high‑impact visual assets, collaborates with leadership to pitch storytelling concepts, and oversees a student/intern workforce to produce timely content. Responsibilities include generating AI‑generated personalized digital content to support recruiting, revenue generation, and fan engagement.
Responsibilities- Pitch high‑level storytelling concepts to Cal Athletics leadership and develop content calendars aligned with recruiting cycles, retention goals, and revenue windows.
- Lead end‑to‑end production of visual assets—graphic design, photography, motion graphics, and identity design—capturing the energy of live events and producing behind‑the‑scenes features for social and digital platforms.
- Develop AI‑generated personalized digital content and templates for elite recruits, student‑athletes, and external brands, ensuring a consistent brand narrative across all channels.
- Leverage emerging technologies (Generative AI, advanced editing tools) to achieve speed and scale while upholding University brand guidelines and modernizing studio workflows.
- Manage content creation budgets, track expenses, and evaluate effectiveness via performance data to inform future work.
- Govern post‑design review processes, analyze feedback and performance metrics, and implement continuous improvements to maintain Power 4 conference excellence.
- Advanced knowledge of industry best practices and program activity.
- Problem‑solving skills, multitasking in a fast‑paced environment, and effective listening.
- Excellent written and verbal communication in English.
- Proficiency with computer applications relevant to the role, with a demonstrated ability to learn new tools.
- Technical expertise in capturing high‑speed sports action and producing content for stadium video boards and social platforms.
- Ability to interpret digital performance metrics (engagement, reach, conversion) to refine strategy and demonstrate ROI.
- Skill in pitching large‑scale concepts to executive leadership and translating them into cohesive brand narratives.
- Experience recruiting, training, and mentoring a student/intern workforce while maintaining quality control.
- Experience budget management and navigating tight, deadline‑driven schedules in collegiate athletics.
- Solution‑oriented mindset integrating emerging technologies without compromising quality.
- Mastery of Adobe Creative Cloud and cinematic camera operation.
- Deep understanding of AI tools for automated workflows, asset scaling, and creative brainstorming.
- Strong coaching, mentoring, and collaboration skills across teams.
- Knowledge of NCAA/Power 4 landscape, recruiting cycles, NIL trends, and retention drivers.
- Current knowledge of Pac‑12, NCAA, and other governing rules, with strict adherence to compliance.
- Bachelor’s degree in a related area or equivalent experience/training.
The budgeted annual salary range is $105,000 – $115,000. This exempt, monthly‑paid, full‑time (40 hours/week) career position is eligible for UC benefits.
