Director of Athletics Photography

At UC Berkeley we are dedicated to fostering a community that feels welcome and can thrive. The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics sponsors 30 varsity sports programs, more than 850 student‑athletes, and employs over 275 staff members.

Position Summary

The Director of Athletics Photography captures high-level images from Cal Athletics events and guides the strategic direction of visual media for the department. This role oversees student photographers, schedules work, partners with freelance photographers, and supports visual storytelling across recruiting, NIL, and revenue‑generation initiatives.

Responsibilities
  • Produces strategic photography for Cal Athletics events, capturing the biggest games and moments for the department while meeting other needs across the department such as team and individual photoshoots for NIL, recruiting, general storytelling and more.
  • Embeds themselves in Cal's football program, covering all games both home and away while shooting other impactful events as well.
  • Shoots all home games for both men's and women's basketball with the potential for selected travel as well.
  • Oversees a group of student photographers, training and scheduling them to shoot Cal events.
  • Makes sure students are equipped with the right equipment to provide the best photography possible.
  • Partners with freelance photographers when needed.
  • Provides key input for strategic discussions and planning for all visual media coverage of Cal Athletics.
  • Helps guide the department's digital and editorial storytelling efforts.
  • Oversees and maintains the organization and archiving of Cal Athletics photography, utilizing an online asset platform as well as an internal server.
  • Ensures images are easily searchable and downloadable for a variety of internal stakeholders.
Required Qualifications
  • Advanced knowledge of design and communications concepts and applicable software applications.
  • Advanced knowledge of production processes for a variety of media and knowledge of vendor requirements for a variety of products.
  • Advanced knowledge of the location, including its vision, mission, goals, and objectives.
  • Advanced design, creative and artistic skills.
  • Advanced skills to devise broad design ideas, present them to clients, and produce results on time and within budget.
  • Advanced interpersonal communications skills, including active listening skills and skills to work effectively within teams and to effectively provide advanced design advice and consultation to clients on all aspects of visual communications.
  • Critical thinking skills, advanced organizational skills and proactive problem-solving / problem resolution skills.
  • Ability to lead and mentor others in the department.
  • Ability to produce sports photography at an elite level, capturing the biggest moments and games to help provide high-level storytelling for Cal Athletics.
  • Ability to hire, supervise, train and empower student photographers to assist with the department's visual storytelling efforts.
  • Maintains student photographers' work schedules and assignments and evaluates their work, providing feedback and education to improve the overall product.
  • Strategic thinker with strong collaboration skills who can help guide the visual storytelling efforts of Cal Athletics.
  • Knowledge of different sports played at Cal, and the history of the programs.
  • Knowledge of the mission of Cal Athletics.
Education
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training (Required)
Salary & Benefits

The budgeted annual salary range is $91,500.

  • This is an exempt, monthly-paid position.
  • This is a full-time (40 hours/week) Career position eligible for UC benefits.
