Departmental Overview

The Puente Project, established in 1981, leads the state in providing equitable instruction, academic counseling, and mentoring to support students marginalized by the educational system. Its mission is to increase the number of educationally underrepresented students who enroll in four‑year colleges and universities, earn college degrees, and return to the community as mentors and leaders.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Program Director, the Community College English Trainer designs, delivers, and manages UC Systemwide training and professional development for educational professionals and administrators, including faculty and staff at California Community Colleges. The Trainer applies adult learning theories and education methodologies to develop and implement new programs and statewide initiatives, conducts needs assessments, creates learning activities, and works on complex programs to address a wide range of issues.

With a high degree of independence, the Trainer serves as a lead and subject matter expert in English, determining needs and developing appropriate professional development programs, technology, and learning approaches. The Trainer also serves on special projects committees as necessary.

Responsibilities PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT, PROGRAM IMPLEMENTATION, & PROJECT MANAGEMENT
  • Plan and develop programs and curriculum for year‑round professional development (PD) projects that provide equity‑focused training.
  • Plan relevant professional development in English in a culturally competent manner and participate in establishing a training framework that supports the Puente Model.
  • Develop and conduct differentiated professional development training for new Puente team members and design ongoing training workshops throughout the year.
  • Develop and implement unique content and materials for professional development and classroom curriculum aligned with Puente pedagogy, mission, and goals.
  • Coordinate professional development and implement new projects.
  • Support, coach, and develop a cadre of trainers‑faculty from the field who support Puente's work.
  • Select and train program consultants and experts.
  • Develop curriculum that supports Puente pedagogy and classrooms.
  • Collaborate with the Puente training team and leadership on long‑term professional development planning and growth.
  • Keep up‑to‑date with research and trends for educationally underrepresented student populations and provide innovative strategies and best practices.
POLICY ANALYSIS & SITE ACCOUNTABILITY
  • Provide support to community college and/or secondary program team members to understand immediate challenges and opportunities.
  • Provide coaching and support to current and new Puente faculty.
  • Assess and evaluate classroom practices, ensuring compliance with Puente pedagogy and equity principles.
  • Support and monitor Puente faculty via email, telephone conversations, and site visits.
  • Collaborate with community college and secondary coordinators to align site practices with current data, research, and student needs.
  • Create and manage effective data reporting systems for Puente teams and administrators.
  • Participate in the creation and implementation of new training materials and guidelines.
  • Develop guidelines and profiles to assist in the selection of qualified Puente Program Faculty.
