Departmental Overview

The Centers for Educational Equity and Excellence (CE3) ensure non‑traditional students excel at the top public university in the world. CE3 programs empower first‑generation, low‑income, and underrepresented college students with holistic support, academic counseling, and a campus referral network.

Position Summary

This role involves providing individualized services to underrepresented, low‑income, first‑generation college students and others at higher risk of academic difficulty. Services may include needs assessment, study plan development, barrier identification, and counseling on factors affecting retention and success. Specializations may involve particular underrepresented groups or academic programs.

Responsibilities
  • Provide comprehensive multicultural holistic counseling across disciplines and colleges/schools to systemically marginalized populations.
  • Conduct comprehensive analyses of students’ issues and needs and develop an action plan to enhance academic success.
  • Assist students in navigating university policies, provide financial aid counseling and academic crisis intervention, triage to appropriate resources, and document all service contacts using the Berkeley Online Advising (BOA) platform.
  • Maintain up‑to‑date and timely documentation of all student meetings and programmatic contact.
  • Hire, train, and supervise paraprofessionals—specifically student staff and interns.
  • Assist students in developing problem‑solving and self‑management skills as part of professional development.
  • Facilitate small group discussion sessions with student staff and interns.
  • Assist with planning and delivery of EOP events, including new student welcome, first‑generation celebrations, workshops, and other programming.
  • Support occasional weekend and evening events.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities that enhance support for students and address inequities faced by non‑traditional communities.
  • Stay abreast of student trends in higher education and campus policies by attending ongoing meetings with stakeholders.
  • Perform other programmatic admin, projects, and duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • Demonstrated knowledge of multicultural counseling theories and practice.
  • Experience enhancing student intellectual and personal growth, including critical thinking, communication, and leadership.
  • Knowledge of student achievement methodologies such as collaborative teaching/learning models, counseling strategies, small‑group facilitation, coaching, and mentoring.
  • Familiarity with trends and issues facing low‑income, first‑generation, and underrepresented students.
  • Strong problem‑solving and program development skills.
  • Experience coordinating and delivering programming, workshops, and events to enhance student experience.
  • Knowledge of conflict management and intervention strategies.
  • Understanding of federal, state, and local requirements for confidentiality, safety, and ethical counseling.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills at all staff levels.
  • Multicultural humility and ability to collaborate with diverse stakeholders.
  • Experience working with historically underrepresented ethnic minority communities and first‑generation college students.
  • Skill in researching, compiling, and analyzing data, and generating reports.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent experience/training.
