Departmental Overview

The Centers for Educational Equity and Excellence ensure non‑traditional students excel at the top public University in the world. By respecting every undergraduate as a unique individual, CE3 programs empower UC Berkeley students to achieve and lead.

The Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) is one of several CE3 programs, and it provides holistic support designed to address the needs of first‑generation, low‑income, and underrepresented college students with the guidance and resources necessary to succeed at UC Berkeley, one of the best public universities in the world. EOP academic counselors and student staff work alongside amazing students who, despite their unique responsibilities and challenges, transform their lives through academic achievement and personal growth.

EOP's individualized academic counseling, comprehensive support services, and extensive campus referral network help students develop the unique gifts and talents they each bring to the university while empowering them to achieve.

Position Summary

Involves providing individualized services to students who are underrepresented, low income, first generation college students, and / or otherwise at a higher risk of experiencing academic difficulty, to help students succeed. Services may include academic needs assessment, developing individual study plans, recognizing and addressing academic and non‑academic barriers to academic success, and counseling on other aspects that may affect student retention and academic success.

Includes specializations in particular underrepresented groups, particular academic skills (e.g., research skills, preparation for graduate programs), or success in particular academic programs.

Responsibilities
  • Provides comprehensive multicultural holistic counseling across disciplines and colleges/schools to systemically marginalized populations (e.g., low‑income, first‑generation college, underrepresented populations, etc.).
  • Conducts comprehensive analyses of students’ issues and needs and develops a plan of action to enhance students’ academic success.
  • Assists students in understanding and navigating university policies, providing financial aid counseling and academic crisis intervention, triaging students to appropriate resources, and documenting all service contacts and interventions using the Berkeley Online Advising (BOA) platform.
  • Maintains up‑to‑date and timely documentation of all student meetings and programmatic contact.
