Position DescriptionThe Assistant Dean for Academic Planning (ADAP) supports the Law School's pedagogical mission by creating and coordinating the curriculum for all Law students—including the J.D., LL.M., and J.S.D. programs—to provide them with the legal knowledge and skills necessary to become effective legal practitioners, scholars, and public policy advocates. The ADAP brings substantive expertise in legal education and administrative management to play a leading role in strategic planning for curriculum development, including course offerings, hiring and allocation of instructors, and development of policies to improve efficiencies, ensure equity, and promote the educational mission.
Core responsibilities include supporting the educational mission of the Law School, selecting and presenting professional and substantive programming on legal pedagogy, and playing a key role in curriculum and budget management.
Duties The ADAP has four distinct areas of responsibility Curriculum planning- Work with the Associate Dean for Teaching to identify faculty for core curricular needs and to designate courses for lecturers and visiting faculty.
- Primary responsibility for ABA‑required legal ethics curriculum; collaborate with six lecturers teaching large sections to ensure courses meet ABA requirements and current legal ethics issues.
- Identify LL.M. curriculum courses and hire instructors for approximately 265 students per year, plus additional students in Executive Track programs.
- Close collaboration with the Office of the Registrar on all aspects of course scheduling to ensure ABA and law school requirements, clear course descriptions, and grading rubrics.
- Assist with the Lecturer Hiring and Review Committee, which hires all lecturers and reviews continuing appointments and merit cases.
- Meet bi‑monthly with HR Academic Analysts and the Associate Dean for Teaching to review lecturer hiring and advancement issues; serve as primary contact for lecturers on these matters and assist newly‑hired lecturers with course design and syllabus preparation.
- Provide support to lecturers in teaching and be available for individual consultation on best practices for course development and pedagogy.
- Administer the course evaluation process and meet with lecturers and faculty to improve teaching quality.
- Supervise all lecturers teaching J.D., LL.M., and J.S.D. courses.
- Oversee the J.D. Writing program and supervise 12 full‑time lecturers who teach the ABA‑required Legal Research and Writing (LRAW) program.
- Directly supervise the Director of LL.M. Legal Writing (AC1) and staff overseeing approximately 19 part‑time lecturers.
- Directly supervise Directors of Field Placements, Pro Bono Programs, Competitions, and UCDC, and staff reporting to them.
- Oversee seven separate budgets for different programs, including Experiential Education, J.D. Legal Writing Instructor, Competitions, and Field Placement Program budgets.
- Responsibilities include:
- Unit budget management, including compensation and non‑compensation operating expenses.
- Participation in annual budget review and setting strategic goals with the Dean, Associate Dean, and others.
- Reviewing periodic budget updates, making mid‑year adjustments as needed.
- Working with direct reports to ensure they remain within approved budgets and providing guidance.
