Program Director, Community Engaged Education (6300U) - Civil & Environmental Engineering

The Program Director works with the Faculty Director of Community-Engaged Education in Civil and Environmental Engineering, the Department Chair, and the Department Manager to reach, serve, and engage alumni and other key constituencies through programs, events, products, and services not primarily related to fundraising. Constituencies include alumni, local community, government, parents, students, and the general public. The Program Director translates constituent needs and priorities into customized programs to create, enhance, and sustain relationships with external constituencies.

This is a part-time (60% FTE) career position with the potential to increase up to 100% FTE in the future, contingent on funding.

Departmental Overview

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) is a complex academic department within the College of Engineering. It comprises seven graduate programs:
Structural Engineering, Mechanics and Materials;
Environmental Engineering;
Transportation Engineering;
Engineering and Project Management;
Geosystems;
Systems Engineering; and Energy, Civil Infrastructure and Climate.

In 2023, CEE was ranked first in the nation for both its undergraduate and graduate programs. The Department consists of 45 faculty, 400 graduate and 400 undergraduate students, and 21 staff plus numerous emeriti, lecturers, and visiting scholars.

Responsibilities
  • Support engaged teaching, research, and outreach activities through communications, scheduling, and direct facilitation of related events.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with area school districts in underserved communities and with community-based organizations in West Oakland, Richmond, San Rafael, and East Palo Alto.
  • Learn and maintain knowledge of ongoing work by CEE faculty and students and match them with external partners based on mutual interests and capability.
  • Coach and support partnership participants through establishing institutional agreements, cultivating the partnership vision, goals and agenda, and continuous improvement and evaluation of the partnership.
  • Organize CEE faculty and students to contribute to community-based events and projects, plan and execute convenings, and communicate clearly to all participants regarding roles, requirements, and expectations.
  • Plan, organize and manage ongoing in-person and virtual engagement of participants, including establishing connections to local high schools for classroom visits, demonstrations, and other activities, especially with underrepresented high schools and impacted communities.
  • Cultivate opportunities to expand engagement and build on existing external partnerships.
  • Support the navigation and negotiation of the initial stages of the partnership, coaching participants through the skills, knowledge, and culture needed for engagement.
  • Maintain regular communication with CEE faculty about emerging opportunities.
Administrative Support for Partnerships and Professional Development
  • Develop expertise in campus practices and procedures to facilitate the establishment of formal on-going partnerships, including purchasing and payments, insurance requirements, contract initiation, and reporting.
  • Seek out and participate in opportunities for career growth and professional development.
Program Evaluation and Reporting
  • Develop and maintain a database that includes information on existing and historical external partnerships with CEE faculty and students.
  • Organize post-engagement reporting from all participants on successes and failures and communicate summaries to all parties.
  • Create reports and updates on the partnerships to present to prospective donors and supporters in alumni communities and industry.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in a related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • Advanced knowledge of the campus, its vision, mission, goals, and infrastructure.
