Skateboarding Instructor, Youth Recreation (4128U), Recreation & Wellbeing – 83736

UC Berkeley Youth Recreation offers a wide variety of seasonal camps and sports activities. We seek an instructor to provide skateboarding instruction and support a safe, inclusive environment for campers.

Position Summary

Provide general supervision, risk management, program instruction, and administrative support to campers and staff in a skateboarding youth recreation program.

Responsibilities
  • Provide general supervision, risk management, and activity oversight for campers.
  • Develop age‑appropriate relationships with campers and address individual needs.
  • Help campers leave their comfort zones and take healthy risks while improving knowledge and skill.
  • Account for all campers, take attendance regularly, and manage transition procedures.
  • Walk campers safely between locations, supervise water/bathroom breaks, assist with belongings, lost‑and‑found, sunscreen, water, trash pickup.
  • Guide campers in resolving problems; step in only when necessary.
  • Supervise and coach Junior Counselors, Counselors‑in‑Training, and CILTs, providing direction and feedback.
  • Motivate all participants to enthusiastically engage in activities.
  • Teach age‑appropriate skateboarding skills in a progressive sequence; assist with leading activities.
  • Run organized and well‑executed classes with opportunities for diverse creative engagement.
  • Connect program values and life skills to activities in a developmentally appropriate manner.
  • Maintain equipment, binder, and supplies; keep them well‑maintained in proper location.
  • Complete and submit paperwork accurately (training, timesheets, lesson plans, certifications).
  • Document and submit incident and accident reports.
  • Conduct daily safety and cleanliness checks of activity area; report needs.
  • Promote theme days, group traditions; facilitate group unity.
  • Assist with special events, staff meetings, and programs.
  • Fill staffing gaps across Berkeley Youth Recreation programs as needed.
  • Maintain supportive environment for all youth.
Required Qualifications
  • Working knowledge of program activity practices and procedures.
  • Strong verbal and written English communication, active listening, critical thinking, multitasking, time management, and flexibility.
  • Judgment and reasoning skills.
  • Client‑service mindset, entrepreneurial spirit, and creative thinking.
  • Basic computer skills relevant to job duties.
  • Knowledge of, or ability to quickly learn, campus policies and procedures.
  • High school diploma or equivalent experience/training.
  • Certification to instruct in applicable recreational sports program or equivalent experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Standard First Aid Training Certification.
Salary & Benefits

Budgeted hourly rate: $18.07 – $26.47. This is a 3‑ to 11‑month, variable‑hour contract appointment. Non‑exempt, biweekly paid. Employees may work up to 40 hours per week during peak summer (May‑August); hours reduce after September‑December to support year‑round skateboarding program.
