Berkeley Forests is UC Berkeley's center for forestry and wildfire research and outreach. We operate six research forests throughout the state to develop and test appropriate management strategies for forested watersheds that will flourish under different climate change scenarios. Berkeley Forests uses our properties as living laboratories for research, education, and demonstration.
This position will serve as the instructor of ESPM 105B. The instructor teaches students how to use common forestry tools, maps, and various sampling methods to collect information about the forest environment. Thirty percent of the time is spent in the classroom learning about the techniques and working up field data. The remaining time is spent in the field applying these techniques in real‑world settings.
Skills taught will include tree and plot measurement procedures, map reading, and simple field orienteering principles.
This position is expected to be able to teach topics including (but not limited to) forest ecology, forest management, forest mensuration, data analysis, and an introduction to plants and trees of the Sierra Nevada.

QualificationsBasic qualifications (required at time of application)
Advanced degree, or enrolled in an advanced degree program, at the time of application.
Preferred qualifications
- One or more years of experience teaching forestry curriculum, including forest ecology and mensuration at the community college level or higher.
- One or more years of experience offering instruction in outdoor settings.
- Familiarity with, and ability to, teach others to use common forestry equipment.
- Driver's license and reliable transportation.
