UC Berkeley Extension (UNEX) invites applications for a pool of qualified, dynamic instructors to teach one or more online courses each year in the Sciences, Mathematics, and Biotechnology department. The position is part‑time, appointed on a course‑by‑course basis, and may begin as early as the spring semester. Semester courses typically run 7‑17 weeks; summer courses run 8 weeks; asynchronous courses may have agreements of 6‑18 months.
Applicants are considered as needs arise; the applicant pool remains in place for 9‑12 months, after which re‑application is required.
Compensation varies by course format.
- Synchronous Live Online (Zoom): $3,250 – $6,000 per course.
- Asynchronous Start Anytime Online: $160 – $180 per final student grade; total per course $2,560 – $18,000; payments begin within 6 months of course start.
Instruction is delivered asynchronously via Canvas or synchronously via Zoom, usually evening or weekend (Pacific Time). Current eligible subjects include:
- Analytic Geometry
- Calculus I
- Calculus II
- College Algebra
- Linear Algebra
- Math for Management
- Multi-variable Calculus
- Pre‑Calculus
- Introduction to Statistics
Other mathematics or statistics courses may be considered—please specify in your cover letter or teaching statement.
Teaching Experience- Classroom teaching experience
- Experience teaching synchronous online lectures via Zoom
- Experience teaching asynchronous online courses via Canvas
Instructors will support student success through inclusive curriculum, classroom environment, and pedagogy. Duties vary by format:
- Doctorate degree or equivalent international degree
- U.S. residency and U.S. work authorization (no visa sponsorship)
- Doctorate in the course subject or related area
- 3+ years of professional or undergraduate teaching experience as primary instructor in the subject
- Experience teaching at a U.S. college/university
- Experience creating syllabi, objectives, lectures, activities, assignments, assessments, and quizzes
- Experience teaching online or developing online course content
- Ability to convey conceptual and complex ideas clearly
- Commitment to inclusive curriculum, environment, and pedagogy
- Effective verbal and written communication skills
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Collaborative team player
- Proficiency or willingness to learn technology:
Canvas, Panopto, Zoom, Microsoft Office, Google Drive/Dropbox, Google Suite
