  • Salary range: The UC academic salary scales set the minimum pay rent full‑time range: $70,977 to $120,835. Starting salary will be based on past college‑level teaching experience.
  • Percent time: 11% to 100%
  • Anticipated start: Fall semester (only) 8/1/26 – 12/31/26;
    Spring semester only 1/1/27 – 5/31/27;
    Academic‑year appointments 7/1/26 – 6/30/27;
    Summer 2027:
    Session A 5/24/27 – 7/2/27;
    Session D 7/6/27 – 8/13/27
  • Review timeline: Fall 2026 and academic‑year positions reviews begin in June 2026;
    Spring and summer 2027 reviews begin in September 2026.
  • Position duration: 6 weeks (summer session), 17 weeks (one‑semester), or full year (academic‑year)

Position Description

The Department of Art Practice at the University of California, Berkeley invites applications for a pool of temporary lecturers to teach studio courses, including but not limited to ceramics, printmaking, drawing, photography, painting, sculpture, video, foundations of visual thinking, and seminars in contemporary global art. Some courses are offered in summer sessions only.

Duties include teaching a studio and/or lecture course (or courses), advising enrolled students, and holding a regular office hour. A Lecturer helps students build conceptual and critical foundations, and practical studio skills that focus on materials, methods, form, content, history, and process.

Summer Session courses meet for a total of 16 hours per week (usually 4 hours × 4 days) for 6 weeks. Academic Year courses meet for 6 hours of lecture per week (3 hours × 2 days).

UC Lecturers are academic appointees in an organized bargaining unit and are exclusively represented by the American Federation of Teachers – Unit 18.

Qualifications
  • Basic qualifications (required at time of application): Advanced degree, or current enrollment in an advanced degree program.
  • Additional Qualifications (required at time of start): Advanced degree.
  • Preferred Qualifications: MFA (or equivalent international degree). Outstanding oral and written communication skills, excellent interpersonal skills, and teaching and exhibition experience.
