About the Position
At the University of California, Berkeley, the College of Law offers a vibrant, inclusive community focused on equity and social justice. The Student Academic Advising and Support Services department serves over 1,200 students across JD, PhD, LLM, and JSD programs, providing academic advising, personal support, programming, and accommodations.
Position SummaryAssistant Director of Student Academic Advising and Support Services, LL.M. Provides one‑on‑one advising and personal support, plans and executes events, and develops programming focused on LL.M. student academic development. Operates independently, applying critical thinking and judgment to aid students and protect the reputation of Berkeley Law.
Responsibilities Academic Advising- Advise on academic plans, professional questions, personal concerns, and summer opportunities.
- Review progress and advise on LL.M. degree completion requirements.
- Assist with alternative academic options.
- Collaborate with the Dean of Students and Senior Director to plan curriculum and ensure ABA compliance.
- Inform students about degree requirements, certificates, bar exam and admission rules, and course planning.
- Provide individualized advising on course selection, load management, study skills, and U.S. legal standards.
- Evaluate student commitments in light of professional goals.
- Develop orientation and bar exam‑related workshops, prepare materials, and lead presentations.
- Plan, coordinate, and implement high‑visibility student events such as orientations and commencements.
- Partner with Event Services, Facilities, and student organizations to execute events.
- Collaborate with the Student Association and other groups to support social and community activities.
- Organize workshops and programs to enhance the student experience and academic growth.
- Assist with scheduling, administration, and proctoring of exams.
- Provide comprehensive student services to the LL.M. student population.
- Meet one‑on‑one to help students adjust to graduate legal education demands and connect them to resources.
- Discuss academic needs and personal challenges with students.
- Refer students to the Disabled Students’ Program when appropriate.
- Interpret and advise on conduct, grievances, disputes, and discrimination matters.
- Work with the International Office and the Dean of Student Services to create support resources.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Advise on the job market process and industry norms specific to each student's field of study.
- Experience with advising, coaching, and counseling techniques.
- Knowledge of University‑specific applications and internal policies, and ability to learn new systems.
- Strong problem‑identification and solution skills.
- Advanced workshop and program design skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and video‑conferencing platforms.
- Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills, including active listening, critical thinking, and persuasion.
- Judgment and discretion while preserving confidentiality.
- Excellent customer‑service orientation and responsiveness.
- Ability to handle frequent interruptions and manage multiple deadlines.
- Experience delivering presentations to student audiences.
- Excellent organizational skills with ability to prioritize, multi‑task, and meet deadlines.
- Commitment to equity, ensuring a safe, inclusive environment for all.
- Sensitivity and effectiveness in dealing with a diverse student body.
- Availability for occasional early‑morning, evening, or weekend events.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively as a team member.
- Familiarity with bar admission requirements for international and LLM students.
- Knowledge or ability to learn Berkeley Law operations and strategy.
- Experience with U.S. visa and immigration procedures, compliance, and employment eligibility for international students.
- Knowledge of U.S. and international legal job markets and their relation to academic planning.
- Minimum:
