PositionSummary
Under general supervision of the Senior Assistant Director, First Year Evaluation Manager, this position serves as a first‑year evaluation specialist and is a member of the first‑year evaluation team. The position holds responsibility for supporting both first‑year and transfer applicants in the admissions process, with particular attention to supporting the admissions, recruitment, and evaluation for first‑year applicants. The incumbent will have a sound working knowledge of K‑16 education;
the ability to evaluate complex student records; and the ability to assess a student’s educational background, making transfer credit judgments, when necessary, and providing prospective students with appropriate advising. The first‑year evaluation team makes intentional efforts to provide clear guidance and training to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions staff and partners on first‑year holistic application review and finalization.

Responsibilities First Year Evaluation Team Responsibilities- Assists in the design and implementation of admission programs for domestic applicants.
- Participates in interviews for first‑year external readers.
- Contributes to the design and execution of training for first‑year readers and evaluators.
- Advises the general public in‑person, by telephone, via virtual platforms, individually or through groups.
- Provides information on admission policies/procedures, and eligibility requirements for all colleges, schools, and major programs.
- Those advised include prospective and current applicants, continuing and returning students, parents, government officials, faculty and staff from UC campuses and other educational institutions.
- Provides in‑depth information on admissions requirements/eligibility requirements, prerequisite courses, school/college programs and curricula.
- Supports admission staff in advising first‑year applicants.
- Plans visits to schools and staff college fairs: schedules and makes presentations, interviews, and follow‑up visits.
- Serves as lead for assigned domestic and/or international areas.
- Responsible for training and managing assigned external readers.
- Reads and scores applications for first‑year and transfer admission.
- Conducts holistic and/or comprehensive reviews of applications, assessing academic preparedness of applicants.
- Assesses applicants for motivation, initiative, leadership potential, work/life experience, extracurricular activities, socioeconomic status, disability, and educational/personal hardship.
- Uses professional judgment when reviewing complex applications for admission.
- Using extensive knowledge of college/school/department requirements and applicant pool, assesses the applicant’s overall record and experience for final admissions recommendation.
- Serves as a point of contact for all assigned schools/community colleges.
- Represents the University of California, Berkeley at school/community college/program visits, college nights/fairs, transfer day/fairs, as assigned.
- Behaves in a manner that promotes goodwill on behalf of the University.
- Plans visits to schools, schedules and makes presentations, interviews, and follow‑up visits.
- Reaches out to potential applicants and provides information about higher education, generally, and UC Berkeley specifically.
