POSITION: Training and Professional Programs Manager

REPORTS TO: Director, Berkeley Rep School of Theatre

WORK SCHEDULE: Monday – Friday (11:30AM - 8:00PM). Some Saturdays required.

CLASSIFICATION: Annual full-time, exempt

COMPENSATION: $72,000; benefits eligible after 90 days.

Position Summary

Berkeley Repertory Theatre (Berkeley Rep) has grown from a storefront stage to an international leader in innovative theatre. Known for its ambition, relevance, and excellence, as well as its adventurous audience, the nonprofit has provided a welcoming home for emerging and established artists since 1968. Over 6 million people have enjoyed more than 500 shows at Berkeley Rep, including 85 world premieres.

Berkeley Rep shows have gone on to win 8 Tony Awards, 9 Obie Awards, 11 Drama Desk Awards, 1 Grammy Award, 1 Pulitzer Prize, and many other honors. In recognition of its place on the national stage, Berkeley Rep received the Tony Award for Outstanding Regional Theatre in 1997. Through its annual seven-play season, together with up to four special event presentations, Berkeley Rep invites audiences to enjoy an eclectic range of theatrical experiences featuring diverse artistic voices, themes, and perspectives.

Reporting to the Director of the School of Theatre, Berkeley Rep seeks a dynamic educator, facilitator, and arts administrator to serve as Training and Professional Programs Manager
. This position leads the design, implementation, and evaluation of public training programs serving adult learners and supports strategic expansion of youth programming. The Training and Professional Programs Manager is responsible for developing sequential curriculum pathways, recruiting and supporting teaching artists, and maintaining high-quality learning experiences aligned with Berkeley Rep’s artistic values.

In addition, this position leads Berkeley Rep’s Professional Development initiatives, designing and facilitating theatre-based workshops for businesses, schools, and community organizations throughout the Bay Area. Through applied theatre practices such as improvisation, ensemble-building, and Theatre of the Oppressed techniques, these programs support communication, collaboration, creativity, and adaptive thinking across professional environments.

With a strong understanding of theatre practice, adult learning, and arts education, the Training and Professional Programs Manager maintains Berkeley Rep’s reputation as a leader in rigorous, inclusive, and innovative arts training.

Duties and Responsibilities Public Training Programs (Classes)
  • Develop and maintain a rotating schedule of theatre training programs for youth and adult learners in disciplines such as acting, improvisation, play writing, and related practices.
  • Design a slate of 100-130 classes across the season, ensuring classes align with income goals, space usage, Teaching Artist availability, and the department’s educational values.
  • Take direct responsibility for income goals for on-site School of Theatre classes.
  • Support the strategic expansion of youth programming (grades 1–12), ensuring curriculum is developmentally appropriate and aligned with sequential skill-building.
  • Support the planning and day to day operations of summer camp programming.
  • Oversee workshop offerings, including curriculum development and implementation.
  • Serve as the first point of contact for student, parent, and Teaching Artist concerns.
  • Maintain familiarity with trends in theatre training, arts education, and adult learning methodologies.
  • Teach classes as appropriate to remain connected to artistic practice and participant experience.
  • Collaborate with the Director to ensure programming reflects Berkeley Rep’s artistic mission and community values.
Professional Development Programs
  • Grow the School of Theatre's Professional Development program, identifying and cultivating new partnerships with businesses, educational institutions, and community organizations.
