College Advisor (5156) Job 86783 – College of Computing, Data Science, and Society (CDSS)

Position at the College of Computing, Data Science, and Society (CDSS), UC Berkeley. Responsible for academic advising, enrollment support, and student engagement for undergraduate students.

CDSS hosts over 4,500 undergraduate students with majors in Computer Science, Data Science, and Statistics. The Student Services unit provides academic advising and supports student success.

• Academic Advising (60%) – Apply advising theories to support undergraduates, advise on courses and degree requirements, empower students, build relationships, explain registration procedures, provide guidance on honors, fellowships, scholarships, and refer to resources. Maintain knowledge of college policies, run workshops, review major change applications, process petitions and exceptions, and monitor academic progress.
• Projects (20%) – Serve on advising committees, support senior advisors on special projects such as communications, peer advising, and outreach.
• Admissions and Recruitment (10%) – Evaluate transfer applications, determine transferability of technical coursework, advise prospective students and counselors, and represent CDSS at recruitment events.
• Professional Development (5%) – Attend training, workshops, conferences, and seminars relevant to the role.
• Other duties (5%) – Assigned duties relevant to the position.

• Demonstrated ability to make sound recommendations and deliver clear judgment in application of policies affecting students.
• Strong organization and planning skills, ability to prioritize and function under time constraints.
• Collaborative ability with faculty, staff, students; fosters inclusive environment.
• Strong knowledge of advising and counseling techniques and student development theory.
• Familiarity with university computer applications and department policies.
• Ability to conceptualize, design, and implement enrichment programs.
• Problem identification and reasoning skills, capability to develop original solutions.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, active listening.
• Discretion and sensitivity in confidential situations.
• Attentive to diverse student backgrounds.

• Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent experience/training.
• FERPA compliance.

Anticipated hiring range: $61,200 – $85,800 (UC salary range: $61,200 – $105,200). Comprehensive benefits package available at University of California Compensation & Benefits website.
