Department OverviewThe Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences (EECS) is the largest department on the Berkeley campus, with over 130 faculty and staff members, 3,600+ undergraduates, 800+ graduate students, and an annual operating budget of $40+ million. EECS offers programs in Artificial Intelligence, Computational Biology, Databases, Graphics, Human‑Computer Interaction, Operating Systems, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, and many more.
Reporting & ResponsibilitiesReporting to the Assistant Director of Undergraduate Affairs, the Student Services Assistant (SSA) performs a wide range of student services duties. The role includes academic advising, recruitment, admissions, policy work, program oversight, and professional development.
Responsibilities- 40%
Academic Advising
:
Provide advanced student services, advise students in EECS, CDSS, CS and ECE majors, conduct degree audits, resolve registration issues, and collaborate with campus offices. - 25%
Recruitment and Admissions
:
Advise on outreach, evaluate transcripts, plan events, and support admission decisions for the CS major. - 20%
Department/School/College Policies
:
Advise faculty on policies, interpret campus regulations, and participate in student‑services committees. - 10%
Program Oversight
:
Oversee CS Honors, CS Minor, Faculty Advising, and Reader Hiring; manage CS Minor program and career counseling. - 5%
Professional Development
:
Serve on committees, maintain knowledge of student‑affairs issues, and stay current on best practices.
- Advanced knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
- Knowledge of university application programs and departmental procedures involving risk assessment.
- Advanced verbal and written communication skills.
- Interpersonal skills and multicultural competencies.
- Advanced knowledge of visa and immigration policies for international students.
- Problem‑identification and reasoning skills, leadership, and persuasion.
- Ability to monitor and improve people, processes, or services.
- In‑depth knowledge of post‑degree employment opportunities.
- Project‑management skills and social perceptiveness.
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent experience.
The university is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. The budgeted salary or hourly range is $74,700 – $103,800. This position is covered by the collective bargaining agreement between UAW and the University of California Regents.
