Assistant Professor $80,800–$128,700;
Associate Professor $99,600–$149,500, with potential off‑scale salary for competitive conditions.

Position Description

The Department of French invites applications for a tenure‑track position as Assistant Professor of French or a tenured position as Associate Professor, focusing on Francophone African literature/film and/or culture whose primary research lies south of the Maghreb. The role requires deep expertise in literary, film, and/or cultural studies of non‑Maghrebi African Francophone Studies and excellence in teaching. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate courses and graduate seminars to students with a range of disciplinary interests.

We welcome scholars whose research spans African Diaspora Studies, Caribbean Studies, Film Studies, Translation Studies, and related fields.

About the Department

The Department of French at UC Berkeley offers advanced courses in French and Francophone literature and culture across all periods, integrating literary history, theory, philosophy, social and cultural theory, linguistics, gender and sexuality studies, critical race theory, colonial and post‑colonial studies, visual arts, music, popular culture, and politics. Faculty collaborate with related programs and interdisciplinary initiatives throughout the university.

The department values inclusive teaching, innovative research, and supports faculty with diverse family needs and non‑traditional career paths.

Basic Qualifications
  • Ph.D. (or equivalent international degree), or enrollment in a Ph.D. program at the time of application.
Additional Qualifications (Required at Start)
  • Native or near‑native proficiency in French to conduct courses in French.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Evidence of top‑quality research and distinction in teaching undergraduate courses and graduate seminars.
  • Knowledge of another African language spoken in Francophone Africa (e.g., Wolof, Pulaar) is preferred.
