Mechanical Engineering Student Assistant
Lawrence Berkeley National Lab's Engineering Division is seeking Engineering Student Assistants to support the LBNL Mechanical Engineering and Manufacturing Engineering Teams. This part-time variable hours position (up to 20 hrs/week) during the semester and up to 40 hours/week during breaks offers hands‑on experience on engineering projects and R&D efforts.
This position involves working closely with mechanical and manufacturing engineering projects and R&D teams. Possible assignments can include ongoing instrumentation development, construction, procurement support, engineering process development, testing, and installation, in scientific areas including high energy physics, cosmology, astrophysics, nuclear science, synchrotron x‑ray light sources and others. Hardware being developed includes precision optical systems for visible light and x‑ray applications, high‑performance magnets, vacuum systems, telescope structures, composite structures, ion sources, precision mechanical alignment systems, state‑of‑the‑art detectors, and more.

The student's responsibilities will be tailored based on their skills and interests. Those inclined towards creating technical documents and quality assurance (QA) processes will focus on tasks related to documentation creation and manufacturing process development. Students interested in CAD and design will work on projects involving design, large assemblies, and manufacturing drawings. They will have opportunities to receive training in engineering tools used cific duties may include:
- Performing 3D modeling and design using Creo Parametric CAD software.
- Producing 2D engineering drawings from 3D models.
- 3D printing applications.
- Assisting in assembling and documenting as‑built documentation.
- Supporting the development of quality assurance documents such as Work Instructions and Test Plans.
- Participating in the development of engineering work processes and documentation.
- Testing the implementation of engineering software tools or CAD tools.
- Full‑time undergraduate student in good academic standing, currently enrolled in an engineering program or similar technical program.
- Basic understanding of engineering principles.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and Google Docs platform.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to deliver clear presentations (technical writing and presentations).
- Some programming experience (you will have an opportunity to deepen your knowledge if your project requires it and you have interest).
- Familiarity or proficiency with mechanical CAD modeling, with preference given to those with experience in mechanical CAD models (you will have an opportunity to deepen your knowledge if your project requires it and you have interest).
- General understanding of Quality Assurance principles.
- Familiarity with FEA or other engineering modeling and simulation software.
This part‑time variable hours position (up to 20 hrs/week) during the semester and up to 40 hours/week during breaks student assistant appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. Hours can be negotiated with your mentor and might vary throughout the year and to ensure you have enough time for your course work.

The starting hourly wage for this position ranges from $18.07 to $23.42, depending on the number of years of education completed by the applicant. Candidates should note that they are responsible for covering their own housing and travel expenses.
